Ke Huy Quan shared his favorite element of ZOOTOPIA ahead of the premiere of its highly-anticipated sequel.
“I look back at my career and there’s snakes in INDIANA JONES, I play Ouroboros in LOKI, which means a snake eating its own tail, and now I’m playing Gary the Snake…so I feel like it’s meant to be,” he joked of his role during an appearance on GOOD MORNING AMERICA.
Quan added, “It’s not easy to play a poisonous pit viper with fangs, and everywhere you go, people are afraid of you! But once we get to meet him, he’s actually a really nice, goofy guy with a big heart.”
“That’s what I love about ZOOTOPIA. It invites audiences to look past, look beyond the stereotypes and labels, and actually see us for who we really are,” the actor concluded.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the GOONIES star explained how his character gets involved in a conspiracy being investigated by ZOOTOPIA’s Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.
“They need to go on this journey to find out why, for a hundred years, no reptile has ever stepped foot in Zootopia,” Quan said. “And there is a mystery that they need to uncover. And that’s where Gary comes in; he shows up and freaks everybody out because he’s a venomous pit viper. Everybody’s afraid of him.”
The actor said it soon becomes clear that Gary is just “misunderstood” and is “actually very fun and friendly…he’s your eternal optimist. And he shows up because he wants to tell everybody, and try to solve a case so that his family can come back to Zootopia.”
“I think I got cast because I think they wanted me to bring some of my own personality into the character,” Quan shared. “I am kind of goofy at times, but also I think it’s because I am so, just because of everything that’s happened to me the last four years, everywhere I go, I feel really excited. I still can’t believe…I’m still here. That’s great. And that’s very Gary.”
This isn’t the only exciting project Quan has in the works. He recently shared an update with fans on a planned sequel to THE GOONIES.
“I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event, and he was so excited. We try to do it, so let’s manifest it,” he said in an interview with Comic Book. “I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it. This time, Chris Columbus and Spielberg are developing it, we have an incredible writer. I mean, I read he turned in the second draft, and they’re really happy about it.”
Quan continued, “I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters.”
