Disney’s live-action SNOW WHITE is officially set to make its streaming debut.

“The family tentpole arrives June 11 on Disney+,” Variety reported, adding that the movie’s theatrical reception wasn’t exactly “glowing.”

Deadline agreed, writing, “This is where the truth will be told on the legacy of this Marc Webb-directed movie…For it’s on the streaming service that Disney recognizes a pic’s popularity and worth, thus determining whether it will get sequels or future theatrical releases.”

The outlet pointed to movies like MOANA and LILO & STITCH, which both received sequels after notching high viewership numbers on Disney+. MOANA 2 made over $1 billion at the global box office, and the live-action LILO & STITCH is on track to make well over $600 million.

SNOW WHITE’s premiere was hamstrung by the controversy that surrounded the movie’s stars, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. Both actresses made public comments about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict — Gadot supporting her native Israel and Zegler posting “free Palestine” messages on social media.

Additionally, many fans of the original SNOW WHITE were turned off by comments Zegler made about the movie’s storylines, implying the live-action version would be more politically correct.

“The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so,” she told Extra TV. “There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird. So we didn’t do that this time.”

Zegler said the new version took “a different approach,” focusing on Snow White’s “inner journey that she goes on to find her true self.”

These new changes didn’t land well with critics, with HuffPost calling it a “hot mess,” and the BBC writing, “The story is cluttered, the tone is muddled, and the pacing is off.”

Zegler shook off the controversies her comments brought up, as well as the negative reviews, telling Vogue Mexico, “I interpret people’s feelings about this film as passion for it — and what an honor to be able to be a part of something that people are so passionate about.”

Critics’ reviews might have been mixed, but SNOW WHITE made over $200 million at the global box office, per BoxOfficeMojo.

Additionally, Movieguide® reviewed SNOW WHITE positively, praising the movie for its “strong Christian, moral, conservative, patriotic, pro-capitalist worldview,” as well as its “delightful, funny, exciting, and wholesome” themes.

The live-action SNOW WHITE might not have made the biggest splash at the box office, but its streaming debut might be the thing that gives it new life — and a new legion of fans.
