Country music star Luke Bryan set the record straight about his sister’s death after she died nearly 20 years ago for a reason science cannot explain.

“I’ve never really explained what happened to my sister,” Bryan told Anderson Cooper while on his podcast. “There’s some misinformation out there on the internet, and I think some people kind of wonder what happened and think that we’ve tried to cover it up.”

“But there is a very, very small percentage of people that die for no reason in the world. And it’s called sudden death syndrome and that’s essentially what they described my sister’s death as she was in her home doing her laundry, and… it was like, you know, somebody just turned the switch off on her and it was just tragic beyond words,” Bryan continued.

Though he and his family searched for answers about what happened – especially to see if the death was due to a chronic condition that could run in the family – doctors were never able to give them an answer beyond sudden death syndrome.

Bryan’s sister Kelly passed away in 2007, and in 2014, her widow passed away as well, leaving their three kids orphans. That was when Bryan and his wife, Caroline Boyer, stepped in and adopted their nieces and nephews, adding onto their two biological children.

“We never thought twice about it. You know, it was never something that [Chris] and I had to sit down and talk about, ‘Should we take this on?’ We just did that,” Boyer said last year.

While this change to their family was not easy, especially given the circumstances, they have leaned on God throughout the process as the seek wisdom on how to raise these kids.

“I think with everything that’s happened in my family, I just have to lean on my faith and the understanding that God has a plan for all of us,” he said. “We just wake up every day and do our best. I’ll get down in the dumps, and then I’ll meet a Make-A-Wish kid, and I’ll ask myself, ‘What are you complaining about? You just have to keep your faith strong and rock on.

“I’ve watched my family go through ebbs and flows where we get mad at God and we get mad at why this has happened,” Bryan later added. “Well, you keep going and you try to, try to be as positive as you can, and you try to appreciate every day. You’ll never get back to 100 percent. You’ll always be working to get back to 75 percent.”

While the death of Bryan’s sister is extremely tragic, God has certainly used it for good and helped Bryan both rely on His wisdom while also caring for these kids in an amazing way.
