Worship Leader’s Daughter Shares How This Family Tradition Changed Her Life

Christian singer Matt Redman’s daughter Maisey discussed the family traditions she cherishes the most and explained why she hopes to carry them over when she has a family of her own.

“So our family started this tradition of doing speeches for birthdays, so on everyone’s birthday every sibling and mom and dad would write a speech and we would all sit down and everybody would… stand up to speak it over them,” Maisey told the “LO Mama” podcast.

“And that was interesting because we were all quite young, but mom and dad taught us how to affirm each other and how to speak out the good in each other, but also I think it was really good because we learned how to also receive encouragement as well and to not find it awkward or uncomfortable but receive it,” she continued.

“I also love that it wasn’t on social media, [my parents] weren’t posting about it,” Maisey added. “It was a really, almost sacred, very private thing we did together, and we didn’t have to make a big deal. But it was so interesting because my brothers would say things, and I thought, ‘I had no idea you that that about me. You’ve never said that to me before…’ So it was an amazing tradition, and it didn’t feel like you were forcing something on us; it felt that you were calling us higher. I think it’s given us a really amazing invitation to speak out good.”

While Maisey loves her family traditions, she also appreciates the traditions she feels she is culturally tied to being British, something she has become even more aware of since something to the States for school.

“I’ve always loved tradition, but I think being in America has made me love it even more and appreciate it so much,” Maisey said. “I really do love [the royal family]. I really appreciate the tradition because, you know, there’s so many things happening in culture on the news, things are constantly changing. I think I love [the royal family] because you’ve got these people who are constant and you’ve never met them but they feel like they’re part of your story, a part of your life.”

“I remember at school, we’d have a day off school and, well, everyone would come to school and we wouldn’t do classes, but we’d celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee,” she continued. “So we’d all dress up and we’d all sit outside and have like a big meal and celebrate. So the royal family has given so many people an opportunity to get together and get around a table and have memories and even if you don’t know them, you still want to celebrate that tradition.”

Maisey graduated from Wheaton College last year, which her dad celebrated on Instagram.

“Maisey, your Mum & Dad & brothers are rejoicing over you in this special moment – and we can’t wait to see what God has in His heart for you next,” he wrote.

She’s also an artist and recently launched an Instagram page that features her art. One piece, called “The Promise,” reminds us that God will never fail.

“In Genesis 8, when the flood subsides, God’s promise to Noah is revealed through a dove,” Maisey wrote. “This drawing is a reminder of God’s unfailing promise to His people, to be with us until the very end. What God promised to Noah, was revealed through the dove, holding the olive leaf. (There are several olive leaves hidden inside the drawing!)”

DUCK DYNASTY’s Korie Robertson and Beth Redman, wife of Christian singer Matt Redman, got together to share how families can build a legacy.

“Many of like the legacy stuff I have learned from the families in my church,” Redman explained. “They never said a word to me. It was not a seminar. It wasn’t a, you know, a message that I heard at church. It was watching their lives and watching them in action during hospitality and things like that.”

Robertson shared, “I am blessed to have parents that love the Lord, and they raised me up in the Lord, and Willie did as well, but also like there’s other people that have spoken into my life that were part of that, were just a part of the church body that were other spiritual mamas to me, and I see that for our girls as well. So like I think it’s so important to really use that. Use the church as what it’s meant to be.”
