National Cinema Day Draws 8.5 Million People to Theaters with $4 Tickets

By Movieguide® Contributor

The second National Cinema Day was even more successful than the first, bringing millions of people to theaters.

The Cinema Foundation coordinated the celebration of theatergoing and drew in an estimated 8.5 million people, up 5% from last year’s inaugural event.

“National Cinema Day was a significant success in bringing together millions of film fans of all ages to enjoy movies on the big screen,” said Bryan Braunlich, executive director of the Cinema Foundation. “Movie theaters and all our partners helped maximize the impact of the day with creative marketing and special promotions that added to the overall excitement, while a diverse slate of exciting films provided something for everyone to see. Thank you to all those hard-working individuals who make the theatrical experience magical.”

With $4 tickets for every format – Imax and Dolby included – the box office saw a 16% increase from the previous Sunday, raking in $34 million in ticket sales. This was also significantly more than last year’s National Cinema Day, which brought in $24.3 million with $3 tickets.

“The positive response to National Cinema Day is just another reminder of how much people love going to the movie theater,” said Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners. “In every corner, audiences came together in large numbers this weekend to share in the experience of seeing great stories on the big screen.”

“These numbers show us that the future of exhibition is strong, and that consumer enthusiasm for the theatrical experience continues unabated,” he continued.

BARBIE was the biggest winner on Sunday, followed closely by BLUE BEETLE and GRAN TURISMO. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM and OPPENHEIMER came in fourth and fifth with significantly less traffic.

“More than 3,000 locations and more than 30,000 screens across the U.S. and Canada participated in National Cinema Day,” MSN reported.

TODAY added, “National Cinema Day, which launched last year, aims to encourage ‘guests of all ages to revisit the incomparable theatrical experience.’”

Movieguide® previously reported on National Cinema Day:

For the second year in a row, movie theaters across the country are offering the cinema experience at a reduced price in a combined industry effort to increase interest in theatergoing.

The second National Cinema Day will occur this Sunday, August 27, as over 3,000 theaters nationwide offer movie tickets for $4 all day.

“Following the rousing success of the first annual National Cinema Day, we welcome everyone to join us for the communal experience of one of America’s favorite pastimes – moviegoing,” said Jackie Brenneman, president of the Cinema Foundation. “We look forward to gathering at the movies and celebrating an exciting slate of new releases and classics, from beloved family favorites and outrageous comedies to thought-provoking dramas and thrilling adventures. There’s something for everyone.”
