Netflix Debuts Curated Playlists for Kids
By Movieguide® Contributor
Kids don’t know what to watch next? Netflix just launched a playlist model that will play continuous shows for kids 7 and under that aims to cut down on scroll time.
Netflix says that this new feature is a test run available for a limited time and is only available in the US, France, South Korea and Brazil. There will be a selection of ten different themes from ABC (ASK THE STORYBOTS, JIM HENSON’S WORD PARTY) to a Bedtime playlist (GO! GO! CORY CARSON, COCOMELON LANE).
The streaming giant hopes to expand this feature and to “attract family viewers with the same appeal of FAST [free, ad-supported streaming television] channels — taking away the chore of finding titles, prompting more content discovery for Netflix’s vast kids catalogue, and potentially boosting its watch time, which is already on the rise,” Kidscreen reported.
Netflix reported that audiences watched, on their streaming service alone, “up to 94 billion hours in the first half of 2024, compared to 90 billion from July to December 2023.”
“We’re always exploring ways to improve the member experience, and these tests help us do so,” Netflix stated.
Movieguide® previously reported on the new kids’ playlist rollout:
Netflix has revealed nine playlists so far, all with a different theme and made up of four to six different titles: ABC Playlist, Animal Playlist, Bedtime Playlist, Birthday Playlist, Dinosaur Playlist, Math Playlist, Music Playlist, Science Playlist and Truck Playlist.
The collections include popular shows like GABBY’S DOLLHOUSE, OCTONAUTS, PEPPA PIG and PJ MASKS.
For parents who are nervous about inappropriate content playing after a playlist is done, don’t worry!
The Streamable reported that “all of the lists will be rated TV-Y7, so parents don’t have to worry about an episode of a show like BRIDGERTON or STRANGER THINGS sneaking in there.”
Netflix’s kids’ playlist model came after Disney+ introduced a similar option earlier this month that features ABC News Live and content aimed at preschool-age children. This fall they will add more playlists, such as, “Seasonal Content” and “Throwbacks,” — “a destination for nostalgic pop culture content,” according to a Disney+ press release.
They will also offer a “Real Life” playlist that will feature documentaries and biopics and “Epic Stories” — “a compilation of action-packed stories from marquee brands and franchises, including Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars.”
“Playlists are the latest example of how we’re providing the best value and experience for our subscribers every time they open Disney+,” stated Disney + president Alisa Bowen in the press release. “Whether it’s news, kids’ content, popular genres, hit TV shows or blockbuster films, there will be something for everyone in a lean-back viewing experience based on seasonality and interest.”
