NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars Drop Tim Tebow: ‘God Works All Things Together for Good’

By Movieguide® Staff

The Jacksonville Jaguars dropped Tim Tebow, who had surprised fans after announcing his attempt to return to the NFL in May.

Tebow’s stint as a tight end in the NFL was cut short before the season’s official start on Sept. 4.

The former Heisman Trophy winner and outspoken Christian released a statement on social media, where he expressed his thankfulness for the opportunity and referenced the Bible.

“Thankful for the highs and even the lows, the opportunities, and the setbacks,” Tebow’s post read. “I’ve never wanted to make decisions out of fear of failure and I’m grateful for the chance to have pursued a dream.”

“Thank you to the Jaguars organization and everyone who has supported me in this journey,” he added. “And we know that … God works all things together for good. Romans 8:28.”

Despite only playing in one preseason game, others in the football community commended Tebow after his exit.

“Proud of you man,” ESPN college football analyst Jesse Palmer said. “Thank you for setting a great example for others to follow their dreams.”

“Tim Tebow, all class, even on the way out,” sports podcaster Jason McIntyre added.

Movieguide® previously reported on how Tebow’s faith became a target for attacks from fans:

While on the Denver Broncos in 2010 and 2011, Tebow’s faith in God was apparent, and players and fans alike ridiculed his public display of Christianity.

With Tebow returning to the NFL–and negative naysayers already piling on–KISS lead singer and bassist Gene Simmons defended Tebow.

“He was widely criticized and made fun of simply because he is a man of faith who believed in his Christian values,” Simmons said of Tebow on Twitter. “Shame on the NFL and the rest of the world for stooping so low.”

In 2011, Football analyst Randy Cross said that many people’s harsh assessment of Tebow was solely because of his faith in God.

“People, especially in the media, root against him because of what he stands for,” Cross told USA Today. “My personal belief is there are people in the media, people in the stands, who are predisposed to see a guy like this fail … just because he’s so public about the way he feels.”
