Former Eagles QB Shares His God-Centered Approach to Parenting

It isn’t easy balancing fatherhood and a career as the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback. But since Nick Foles’ retirement from the game, he’s been able to focus on his wife and kids.
The former quarterback recently opened up about parenting and discipline with Sports Spectrum’s podcast host Jason Romano.
“Do they get what they want all the time? No. Do I have to discipline them? Yes, I do it out of love,” Foles began. “Our daughter, not so much. She’s actually a pretty good kid. I actually don’t really get a chance to discipline her. So, when she ever does, I do because she’s no’t used to it. But our boys give me plenty of opportunities to discipline every single day.”
“But then I realized, you know, in life, I feel like one of the hardest things we go through is why do things happen? Why did this happen? Why did this happen to me? Why am I not getting this promotion? What am I not succeeding?” he continued. “And then I’m like alright, I’m a dad. This is what I’m doing. Our Heavenly Father loves us more than I could ever love our children. So, I can’t give my children everything they want. They wouldn’t grow up the right way. It wouldn’t be right. They’d grow up entitled and all these different things.”
“And I’m like, so when our Heavenly Father does that, He’s trying to teach us something,” Foles concluded. “He’s allowing us to grow and realize that’s not what it’s about. It’s about our faith. I’m trying to lovingly discipline our children so when they grow up they understand the important characteristics of life and how to live life. And my hope is someday they give their life to Christ obviously on their own, because I can’t do it for them.”
Movieguide® recently reported on Foles’ retirement from the NFL:
“I want to thank my mom and dad. You all instilled in me a work ethic that took me to the NFL,” he said in his retirement video. “The character traits y’all have, the hard work y’all have, thank you for being that example for me.”
Foles also thanked God for the opportunity to play the game he loved at such an elite level.
“I wanna thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing me to live my childhood dream,” Foles said. “I’ve grown so much in my faith in this time.”
“As I step away from this game, I want to cheer on the next generation of NFL players. Go out there each and every day and give it everything you have. As this chapter closes, another one opens. I’m truly grateful for my time in the NFL,” he added.
He’s also been working on his clothing brand, DAD SZN, which he founded with NFL punter Pat O’Donnell.
Their goal? “To provide a platform for dads to connect, share their stories, and support one another in their journey of parenthood.”
“I was just very passionate about it because I’m a dad myself,” he said of the brand on the “Green Light with Chris Long” podcast. “I’m fortunate to have a wonderful father that pushed me and has always been there for me.”
“The message is, you know, dad season, you know, fatherhood being present with your children, but a lot of guys are working. They’re not always around, but they still love their kids, right? So there’s all different walks of Dad,” Foles added.
