Oklahoma Softball Chaplain Shares How God Transformed Her: ‘A Work In Progress’

By Movieguide® Contributor

University of Oklahoma softball chaplain Sarah Roberts recently shared how she stays motivated while juggling many different roles.

From national champion to team chaplain, from mom and wife to Fellowship of Christian Athletes Director of Women’s Ministry, Roberts described why she enjoys her many responsibilities and shared that “the Lord that motivates me [Roberts].”

“Whether I am doing ministry inside my home as a mom, as a coach’s wife, or in the ministry outside of my home. That is what I am called to do,” Roberts said on Sports Spectrum’s Transformed podcast.

When host Jade McCarthy asked how she does it all, Roberts responded, saying, “Somedays, not very well.”

“That is just the honest truth, I am going to fail, and I have failed numerous times in every single one of those areas, but I’ve learned how to fail forward.”

“If I am going to learn how to lead in every single one of those areas of my life, I have to learn how to follow first,” she continued. “I have to be a follower of Jesus before I can ever go lead in the name of Jesus.”

Roberts also revealed how God has transformed her. “I’m like Paul,” she said. “I’m not who I used to be, but I’m not where I want to be. I’m still a work in progress.”

Growing up, she found her value in how well she performed.

However, one day she discovered that “There’s nothing you can do to make God love you anymore, and there’s nothing you can do to make God love you any less.”

“That just transformed how my mind worked, how I looked at my relationship with God as not a transactional relationship but a transformational one,” Roberts expressed.

Following the Oklahoma Softball National Championship win, Roberts tweeted “It’s hard to put into words the love for my @OU_Softball girls and my gratitude for the Lord and his goodness. I have seen their struggles, heard their fears and prayed over their doubts… all to see the Lord give them their Ephesians 3:20 moment. Let’s go!!!!!”

Movieguide® recently reported on the champions:

In a post-game press-conference an ESPN reporter asked how the team handled the pressure and kept their joy, team captain Grace Lyons answered, “The only way that you can have a joy that doesn’t fade away is from the Lord. Any other type of joy is actually happiness that comes from circumstances and outcomes.”

“Joy from the Lord is really the only thing that can keep you motivated [and] in a good mindset, no matter the outcomes,” she added.

Teammate Jayda Coleman added saying she agreed “1000%.” After last year’s national title Coleman said she still felt empty, and she couldn’t understand why.

“I was just so happy that we won the College World Series, but I didn’t feel joy,” Coleman stated. “I didn’t know what to do the next day. I didn’t know what to do for that following week. I didn’t feel filled, and I had to find Christ in that.

“I think that’s what makes our team so strong is that we’re not afraid to lose because it’s not the end of the world if we do lose,” she added. “Yes, obviously, we worked our butts off to be here and we want to win. But it’s not the end of the world because our life is in Christ and that’s all that matters.”
