Christian Actress Talks Surrendering to God ‘Day By Day’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Priscilla Shirer is emphasizing the importance of surrender, discipleship, and “giv[ing] ourselves grace” in a new episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast.”

“I think we’ve lost a little bit of focus in the church, and I say that in a very broad, general way, but in the church on actually coming to spiritual maturity, on becoming more like Christ,” Shirer told Bure. “That’s supposed to be the goal across a lifetime. It’s not something we arrive at. It’s something that day by day, month by month, we are growing. We’re becoming molded into the image of Christ and we’re becoming mature…we’re able to make discerning and wise decisions that we didn’t even see clearly 10 years ago.”

She added, “It’s just that encouragement to keep growing, continue growing. You haven’t gotten there, wherever there is. There’s still a path for all of us, no matter our age or maturity level at that time.”

Part of that growth is discipleship, a topic explored in Shirer’s latest movie, THE FORGE.

“It is basically about discipleship,” she said of the movie. “It’s about the importance not only of personal surrender, but the flip side of discipleship is how impactful it can be when one life is connected to another life, and when someone is walking alongside of you to help, to give you a model.”

Shirer also spoke about the importance of giving grace to ourselves and others.

“Sometimes, we forget to give each other grace and we forget to give ourselves grace. We get kind of disgruntled with our own selves…but His grace?” she asked. “He knew. He knew you’d still be struggling. He knew you’d still be wrestling with that particular issue….so if He can give you grace, give it to yourself. Take a deep breath and know that He’s got you for the next day that’s ahead.”

Shirer then touched on the subject of surrender.

“It is a day-by-day [process],” she said. “Day by day, saying to Him, ‘Okay, Lord, I’m going to hand this back to you, and then I’m going to release it to you, and then I’m going to have to trust as to whether or not you’re going to give it back to me in the way that I’d like you to, or if you’re going to bring something full-circle in my life in an entirely different season that allows me, at least, to understand your choices for me, Lord.’”

Shirer explores surrender further in her book, “I Surrender All.”

“Salvation is a gift of God. It’s free. It’s grace. It’s the cross,” a description of the book reads. “Discipleship comes at a high cost. It’s surrender. It’s effort. It’s a daily choice to lay down your life and follow His. Few believers choose this route, but the ones who do will experience the abundance that only the surrendered life can offer. It’s the one choice standing between you and the life of freedom and fulfillment, of peace and purpose you’ve always wanted. ‘I Surrender All’ is all about making that choice.”

In an interview with First For Women, Shirer explained that the book is “a companion piece to THE FORGE movie.”

“It is about surrendering your life to Jesus, what that means, to not just be a Christian but to take it to the next level and actually walk with Jesus, cultivate a friendship with Him and surrender everything to Him,” Shirer said. “What does that look like? It’s a companion for someone who leaves the theater and actually wants to know, ‘Now what? Now what do I do?’ Hopefully it will help people walk that journey with the Lord.”
