Rapper Caleb Gordon Discusses ‘Renaissance’ in Christian Music

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian rapper Caleb Gordon explained why he feels like there has been a major resurgence in Christian music lately and reflected on how his projects fit into that.

“I feel like it’s a Christian music renaissance right now,” Gordon told The Relevant Podcast. “Christian music is having this renaissance of we are going to make great art and that’s our focus. We will make great art and that will bring people closer to God because, the thing is, people are going to see the art and they’re gonna be like, ‘How did you do it?’ And that’s how we point them to God.”

Gordon didn’t always center his career on Christ. Holy Culture Radio reported, “he didn’t pursue a serious career in the music industry until his late teenage years. He did so initially taking a secular route, under the aliases ‘Cash G’ and later, ‘YTM Cash’ but this plan was short-lived. Gordon’s world took an optimistic turn, a result of his decision to live for Jesus Christ after graduating High School.”

“Jesus has the Bible and, in the Bible, He would tell these great parables and all these parables are great stories. These aren’t stories that are, like, half done. These are stories that people make movies about, make TV shows about. Like, the stories He told – and to us, they’re more than just stories – but to the world, that’s how He drew them in was these stories,” he continued. “I feel like, for us, we do the same thing with music because we have to make great art first, and that’s when the world and people will be like, ‘Yo, what’s going on over here? Why is it so good?’ And that’s when we have our moment, and we point it back to God.”

Gordon believes that keeping the spotlight on God is the most important thing. God gave him this platform for His glory.

“I’m putting out music to literally show people the kingdom of God. I had a conversation with my homies the other day, I was like, if God came and saw me right now and just pulled up on me, He would ask me, He’d be like, ‘Yo, does it look like heaven where I’m at?’” Gordon said. “That’s what’s more important.”

“Like, does it look like heaven where I’m ministering this music,” he continued. “Like, I say I’m doing this and I’m doing that, but is this heavenly focused? Is this community bringing people together or is this me? So the moment it gets selfish is the moment He takes it away.”

The rapper hopes that his music not only helps people see God but also helps people find a deeper appreciation for Him and better understand what it means to be a Christian.

“My whole focus is, people don’t even know how much access they have in the kingdom of God. It’s like royalty. Imagine you’re a prince or a princess, and you don’t even know all the access you have to the king and queen. And I’m trying to get people to know, like, ‘Yo, you’re in the kingdom of God, and you have this access, and I think that is my message,” Gordon explained.

As he ministers to people from the rap space, he also wants them to realize that they can still live a good life while following God’s plan. They don’t have to turn to drugs or partying to feel content.

Movieguide® previously reported on Christian rap:

Chart-topping Christian recording artist Lecrae vulnerably shared that grace captivated his heart toward Jesus Christ.

Lecrae has popular song titles with other singers like Tori Kelly, Andy Mineo, Kari Job, and Tedashii, but the rapper is also a particular case study because he never shies away from working with nonbelievers.

Rapper Waka Flocka Flame and Ty Dolla$ are just a few examples.

Yet, Lecrae makes no apologies and also never backs down from being who he is in Christ around them.

In one of his recent Instagram posts, Lecrae stands next to popular mainstream rapper Chance the Rapper and his mother.

In the past, Chance spoke out about taking a hiatus to go deeper into the word of God and often has tidbits of Christian symbolism in his lyrics.
