Singer Jewel Praises SOUND OF FREEDOM, Laments Unwarranted Attacks Against its Message
By Movieguide® Contributor
Singer-songwriter Jewel praised SOUND OF FREEDOM while lamenting the senseless polarization that sought to delegitimize the movie’s message.
“You guys, I just saw SOUND OF FREEDOM. You have to see it,” Jewel said in a video posted to Twitter. “It’s the most inspiring film. Did you know that there are millions of children in slaver? This is the faster-growing criminal enterprise.”
It saddens me that some media is trying to politicize this movie. This is not left or right. It’s about millions of kids being trafficked, and no matter what your faith or creed, we need to protect all the vulnerable kids rather than fight over philosophical differences. pic.twitter.com/aKjCtUlmi3

The movie has become a surprise success, reaching $45 million at the box office in its first week and outselling INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY in its July 4th ticket sales.
“[It’s] the little indie movie that could,” Jewel said.
However, as it has succeeded, multiple platforms have seeked to delegitimize the movie’s message by connecting it to QAnon and extremist beliefs.
The Rolling Stone review teaser calls it a “QAnon-tinged thriller… designed to appeal to the conscious of a conspiracy-addled boomer.” While a review in The Guardian calls it a “QAnon-adjacent thriller.”
“It saddens me that some media is trying to politicize this movie,” Jewel added. “This is not left of right. It’s about millions of kids being trafficked, and no matter what your faith or creed, we need to protect all the vulnerable kids rather than fight over political differences.”
Movieguide® previously reported on SOUND OF FREEDOM:
The movie hit No. 3 at the box office in its opening week, earning almost $20M.
“The strong response to faith-based films reflects a demand by an underserved audience who are hungry for entertainment that reflects their values and beliefs,” Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst said. “Such content can indeed find an enthusiastic audience, generate solid box office and impressive profits for their investors.”
SOUND OF FREEDOM made a statement during its July fourth opening, generating $14.2 million on its first day. The momentum continued over the weekend as it made another $18.2 million over Saturday and Sunday.
