NBA Champion and Olympic gold medalist Stephen Curry revealed why Philippians 4:13 became his favorite Bible verse.
“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength,” the verse reads.
“That’s my source of strength and determination and my purpose, really. Anything that you do in life is going to require undying faith in yourself and the belief that you can conquer anything. For me, that’s where I get my strength — that I can do all things,” Curry said on THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT.
“When I was a freshman in college at Davidson College in North Carolina, my mom texted me before my first practice, and she gave me a bunch of words of encouragement,” the athlete recalled. “Her favorite verse is Romans 8:28. She said you need to pick a verse you can go to in times of need and give you that inspiration. So Philippians 4:13 — I write it on every pair of shoes. ‘I can do all things.’ It’s a great reminder. You’re always searching for purpose while you’re here, and for me, that’s it.”

Colbert then asked Curry if he thinks God picks the winners of games.
“He might do a couple of parlays. You never know,” Curry joked.
The point guard also talked about the honor he has to lead people to Christ through basketball.
“Somebody made a joke when I came back from Paris — ‘You are God’s favorite basketball player.’ I don’t know how to take that, but if I can lead you to him through shooting hoops, that’s all right,” Curry said.
Aside from basketball, Curry’s latest endeavor was producing for the animated children’s movie GOAT, which puts a twist on his love of basketball.
Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:
GOAT is an animated movie about a goat named Will Harris who goes from playing street ball to becoming a pro athlete. Native to a city called Vineland, Will has shown he’s a great player in Roarball, a sport like basketball. However, Will has one problem: he’s small. Happily, Will catches the attention of the Thorns’ team owner. So, will he finally have the chance to prove to the world that smalls can ball?
GOAT is a fun family movie. The movie’s quality is top-notch, with great visuals, vibrant colors, and amazing animation, paired with a cool art style. GOAT conveys a strong moral worldview with redemptive aspects. Will, the animal hero, is hopeful and believes in his dreams. He’s not concerned with his height but more with his character and abilities. Will perseveres through every trial he faces, lifting up those around him and standing up for what’s right. However, GOAT has some gameplay scenes with violence and other scary elements that may not be suitable for younger children. MOVIEGUIDE® advises parents to use discernment, especially if their child is easily scared by intense action.
“The idea of dreaming big, even when critics and doubters are around you — I still carry that mentality and want to prove myself every time I step on the court,” Curry said of the movie’s themes. “It’s not just for sports, it’s not just for basketball. It’s a mentality I think most people have found themselves in at one point or another — something we can all tap into.”
No matter what Curry may face, he knows that with Christ on his side, he can do all things.
