Television Academy Announces New Rules for Primetime Emmys

The Television Academy announced new rules as this new era of “Peak TV” is upon us.
Over 500 scripted television shows and over 1,000 reality shows were on air in 2019, so the rule change is one that will hopefully allow more programs to be honored.
The most notable updated rule is that the outstanding comedy and drama categories will have eight nominations, no matter the number of submissions.
The rule goes into effect for this year’s 72nd Emmy Awards.
In addition to the above rule, the Academy is also restructuring how the nominees in each category are selected.
According to Variety, “’To align the nominations selection process across all awards categories and to allow for more inclusiveness in the recognition of excellence’ in other categories, the number of nominees per category will now be based on the number of submissions in each category.’”
Emmy submissions for 2020 have increased 15% from last year, according to the TV Academy.
Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma said, “The increase in submissions is a reflection of the number of new voices, new television platforms and a tremendous growth in content from existing platforms across our industry. Despite production suspension resulting from COVID-19, there is a wealth of excellent work submitted for this year’s competition.”
According to Variety, the TV Academy previously had seven nominees in the comedy and drama categories, six in variety talk, variety sketch, structured reality, unstructured reality, and competition, and five in all other categories.
The number of nominations in a category will now be determined using these rules:
1-19 submissions: A sliding scale between zero to 4 nominations
20-80 submissions: 5 nominations
81-160 submissions: 6 nominations
161-240 submissions: 7 nominations
> 240 submissions: 8 nominations
Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 28.
Jimmy Kimmel is set to host this year’s awards show, which will air Sunday, September 20 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
