Tim Allen Teases Possible TOY STORY 5: ‘Going to Be Too Much?’
By Movieguide® Contributor
The hit Disney franchise TOY STORY might make its way back to big screens for a fifth installation.
Tim Allen, who played Buzz Lightyear, joined THE TONIGHT SHOW with Jimmy Fallon, where he teased a potential return to Woody and his friends.
“Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on and actually said it was going to happen,” he said. “They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it…You wonder if four was too many. Is five going to be too much?”
“According to the scuttlebutt, the writer that’s doing it wrote one of the better ones and said, ‘If I didn’t get this right, I wouldn’t do it.’ It could be a very, very interesting way to reunite it,” Allen added.
However, “If the pair do reprise their roles, Buzz and Woody will need to find their way back to one another because, you might recall, Woody traded Bonnie’s home for the carnival to remain with Bo Peep (Annie Potts) at the end of TOY STORY 4,” Entertainment Weekly reported.
In a recent interview with The Movie Dweeb, Allen explained how a fifth movie could play out.
“I don’t know if this is where the story is going, but what if the whole story was through Andy as an adult? [He] has children, and they just happen to be online, and the kid goes, ‘Have you ever seen this toy?’ and Andy sees that Buzz has got a hand missing and they’re selling these vintage toys, and Andy goes and gathers all the toys up. He has to go out and find each one of them and put them back together, bring them back to his house, and start the whole thing over again with his son,” he said.
“…It’s all through Andy’s eyes because we [the toys] made his life, and now he’s returning that favor,” Allen concluded.
According to Variety, “One thing is for sure: Pixar needs a box office hit and TOY STORY 5 is a no-brainer on paper, at least. The studio flopped at the box office in 2022 with LIGHTYEAR and only slightly rebounded with ELEMENTAL this year. The decision to send original Pixar efforts such as SOUL, LUCA and TURNING RED straight to streaming on Disney+ during the pandemic had a negative impact on the studio’s theatrical output, although bringing back franchises with INSIDE OUT 2 in 2024 and TOY STORY 5 in the future should prove beneficial.”
Movieguide® praised the first TOY STORY for its uplifting content:
The movie is overflowing with heroism, virtues and moral messages, not the least of which is that while envy can only destroy, friendship can overcome. The double entendre in the film will make it just as appealing to teenagers and adults as it is to younger children. TOY STORY has a heart of gold. It is funny, clean, wholesome, and virtuous. It is a classic beginning to a new genre — a masterpiece which is sure to capture the imaginations of young and old alike.
