MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE star Tom Cruise will do whatever it takes to get the shot, even if it means almost breaking his back in the process.
According to Fox News Digital, bonus content for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING shows the “high-flying biplane battle between the actor’s character, Ethan Hunt, and Gabriel, portrayed by Esai Morales.”
The scene saw Cruise jump from one plane to the next in midair.
“Oh, this almost broke my back,” Cruise said in the commentary as the scene played out, per Entertainment Weekly.
“You’re talking about a lot of pain here,” film director Christopher McQuarrie added.

As the scene played out, viewers could see Ethan grab a seatbelt and hang on for dear life as the plane twists and turns mid-air.
“Now watch this: The thing we haven’t talked about, holding on to this belt,” McQuarrie said.
“Oh ***, that was brutal,” Cruise added.
“This separated the joints in Tom’s fingers from the force, so by the time we finished this sequence, your hands were absolutely swollen — oh my ***, it was so painful to watch,” McQuarrie revealed.
The next part of the scene saw Gabriel roll the plane midair, slamming Ethan into its side.
“Oh, that was brutal. That hit, that was a hard one,” Cruise said.
“And you improvised that, thank you very much. I appreciate that,” McQuarrie shared. “You were like, ‘I think we’re gonna need that,’ and I was like, ‘I didn’t ask you to do that.'”
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING had an incredible opening weekend earlier this summer, grossing over $75 million, per Comic Basics. Cruise took to his social media to express his gratitude.
“This weekend was one for the history books! Congratulations and thank you to every filmmaker, every artist, every crew member, and every single person who works at the studios,” the actor wrote.
“To every theater and every employee who helps bring these stories to audiences, thank you,” he continued. “To everyone that works at Paramount Pictures and Skydance, thank you for your many years of partnership and unwavering support. It goes from exciting one action setpiece to another while always developing the characters, including supporting characters. It has lots of drama in tense scenes featuring the President. FINAL RECKONING has many Christian allusions. Ethan Hunt is overtly depicted as a compassionate messianic hero. He undergoes a symbolic death and resurrection, and, at one point he’s saved by Grace, the romantic female lead. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING has some intense violence and seven mostly light obscenities. So, it merits caution for older children.
Cruise’s commitment to authenticity certainly shines through in THE FINAL RECKONING, even at the risk of his own safety.
