While on his press tour for the upcoming MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie, Tom Cruise shared the grueling conditions he faced while filming an intense underwater scene.
“A lot of times I [could] not see because of the reflection of the light,” Cruise told THE TONIGHT SHOW, per Variety. “So, I would go in, kind of blind, spend a lot of time on the set figuring out [the movement] as we’re figuring out the shots. Then, when I’m doing it, I had a hard time. Plus the suit, when it’s wet, increases in weight by about 125 pounds. So, the kind of workouts and things that I ha[d] to do just to prepare for these things, it’s years of development. And yeah, and I’m producing it, so it’s also that kind of thing.”
This is not the first time that those working on the movie have shared just how intense this underwater scene is. Director Christopher McQuarrie previously teased that during an advanced screening, the audience had a very visceral reaction to it.
“We had a small screening and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack,’” McQuarrie told Games Rader, per Comic Book. “And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.’”
Surprisingly, the underwater scene may not even be the most intense one in the movie. As the release of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FINAL RECKONING has inched closer, Cruise shared about a scene he performed where he walked along the wings of an airborne airplane.
“I’m an aerobatic pilot being able to fly these airplanes, so I now choose the airplane and present it — what colors should they be, what engineers do I have building this aircraft and working on the engines and how far can I push this aircraft?” Cruise told TikTok creator Reese Feldman earlier this May, per Variety. “No, I have to hire the crew; I audition the crew around me. And I’m learning how to wing walk, and this kind of wing-walking that we’re doing has ever been done before because what I want to do is really, really extreme.”
“The speeds, you know, that we’re ranging were from 97 miles an hour to 145 miles an hour. And the force, the air flow, and the force over the wing and on my body was really significant,” Cruise added. “I wanted to go zero-G between the wings and when you’re seeing that stuff, I mean, I literally just have a wire attached.”
As Cruise goes all out for this movie, many are speculating it may be his last entry into the series both because of the movie’s title and Cruise’s age. Fans should have a good idea whether this is the case soon enough as MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FINAL RECKONING hits theaters on May 23.
