Tom Cruise Lived Out This Childhood Dream on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Set
By Movieguide® Contributor
Many fans know that Tom Cruise performs all of his own stunts in the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE series, but doing so in DEAD RECKONING PART ONE allowed him to fulfill a childhood dream.
“There’ll be Tom going: ‘From five years old I’ve always wanted to jump from a cliff on a motorbike,’ and realizing his dream,” co-star Hayley Atwell told The Guardian, explaining parts of the movie that were improvised into the script “With the rest, they’re kind of making it up as they go.”
More intense scenes are coming in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FINAL RECKONING. Last month, director Christopher McQuarrie revealed that there is an underwater scene that left audiences on the edge of their seats during a prescreening.
“We had a small screening and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack,” McQuarrie said. “And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.’”
The audience’s reaction to that scene is not unwarranted as Cruise spent over six minutes underwater while it was filmed. Furthermore, Cruise and McQuarrie drew on decades of experience working together to create an underwater scene worthy of the franchise.

The fulfillment of childhood dreams and execution of the most intense stunts the franchise has seen hint to this movie bringing MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE to a close. Some fans already thought this might be the case, given Cruise’s age and the name of the movie: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FINAL RECKONING.
Whether that is the case or not, Cruise is working to make sure the movie is as polished as possible. Atwell revealed that even though MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 is only months away from theaters, Cruise and the team are still doing reshoots to get everything right.
“[Cruise is] fleshing out scenes or changing things around,” she said. “They’re always tinkering and looking to make things better.”
The next MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie is coming to theaters on May 23.
