MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 Gets Trailer and Title

By Movieguide® Contributor

After three years of delays, the eighth movie in the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE series finally got a title and a trailer.

Much of the branding for the movie titled MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE — FINAL RECKONING suggests this may be the final movie in the franchise. Its star, Tom Cruise, for example, wrote “every choice has led to this,” on an Instagram post promoting the movie.

The eighth movie in the series was originally supposed to release in 2022 as an immediate follow-up to the seventh movie, DEAD RECKONING PART ONE, as DEAD RECKONING PART TWO. The pandemic, however, threw off these plans, pushing PART ONE to 2023 and indefinitely delaying PART TWO.

Despite the two-year delay in release, DEAD RECKONING PART ONE performed well at the box office, ending at No. 13 for the year and helping buoy the industry. Despite strong violence and language, the movie’s uplifting story led to its success. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE tells a gripping story of good versus evil. It’s a superlative, high stakes spy thriller with explosive action, gripping suspense and great characters. DEAD RECKONING PART ONE has a strong allegorical Christian worldview, with the theme that, “The Cross of Christ holds the key to destroy evil.” However, the movie has lots of strong action violence and some foul language, including four strong profanities. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for teenagers and adults.

Unfortunately, filming for DEAD RECKONING PART TWO was further delayed by the writers’ and actors’ strikes, separating the seventh and eighth movies even more than anticipated. In the end, the title for DEAD RECKONING PART TWO was changed, though the storyline is still expected to pick up immediately after PART ONE.

Along with the release of the new title, Paramount dropped a trailer showing numerous incredible stunts that audiences will enjoy during the next movie. Whether it will be the final movie in the series is yet to be officially announced, although the branding and Cruise’s age suggest there is a good chance the franchise ends here.

Almost all of the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movies, including MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, have been nominated for Movieguide® Teddy Bear Awards®.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE — FINAL RECKONING hits theaters on May 23, 2025.
