Why Jonathan Isaac Launched an Apparel Company: ‘Buy With Their Values’

In a recent interview with Kirk Cameron, Orlando Magic basketball star Jonathan Isaac reflected on his decision to create a company that embodies godly principles.

Over the summer, Isaac launched Unitus, a sports and lifestyle apparel brand that is Bible-based.

“The story behind Unitus is simply about looking out into our culture and marketplace, and seeing brands, sports and apparel companies, continuing to move farther and farther away from Godly values and principles, and also constitutional values and principles,” Isaac told Cameron.

After a conversation with his pastor, Isaac decided to be proactive and create his own line.

“I understand that instead of just complaining about the issue, why don’t I step into the marketplace and alleviate the problem and give lovers of God, lovers of freedom, the freedom to buy with their values, and that’s what I tried my best to do with taking on Unitus,” he explained.

When Kirk Cameron asked Isaac about the name “Unitus,” which means “unite-us,” Isaac offered a profound answer.

“When I talk about the agendas that are being spewed, a lot of the things that are going on. It’s to ignite division. White against black, male against female, the things that are happening in our school systems today, the things that are being taught, and it’s even worked its way into the church where we’re divided on issues. We’re divided on biblical issues that in my opinion should be forthright with the word of God and what it says.”

“UNITUS gives you a way to confidently wear what you believe, without compromising style or performance. But it’s more than cool clothes—UNITUS is a community of people rallied around faith, family, freedom, and the pursuit of true greatness. Together, we rise above by working every day to be the best we can be, joyfully serving others with integrity, and standing for what’s right,” the brand’s website states.

Isaac became a controversial figure in 2020 for his decision to stand for the national anthem when all of his teammates chose to kneel amid the Black Lives Matter protests.

“I didn’t believe that the answer was going to come from an organization [or] that the answer was going to come from a political party or movement. The answer was going to come from… understanding that we all fall short of God’s glory and if we could choose to love each other the way that God loves us which is in spite of our sin, in spite of our shortcomings. And we could have true change and true progress,” he explained.

NBA star Jonathan Isaac recently shared how his faith led to his decision to stand for the National Anthem despite the immense pressure he faced to kneel in 2020 after the death of George Floyd.

“I knew what I was standing for was dear to me. I knew I believed that the Gospel was going to be the answer for the world, that all of us saying that we all fall short of God’s glory, and that if we’re throwing stones at anybody else—at a different color, at a different individual—we’re throwing stones from a glass house because we’ve done wrong too. We are all in need of grace,” Isaac said in a recent video for PragerU.

Movieguide® previously reported on Isaac’s vocal stand for his faith. In his book Why I Stand, “Isaac explains that he could not find the answer to life’s many hardships when he looked to the world. ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the answer because he’s been the answer for me.’”
