Why Ryan Gosling Puts His Family First: ‘It’s Going Super Fast’

Though Ryan Gosling is one of Hollywood’s most prominent stars, his first focus is his family, followed by his acting career.
Gosling had been a mainstay in the entertainment industry for over a decade when he decided to take a four-year acting break in 2018 to spend time with his daughters.
“Just to be with my family. I didn’t want to miss anything,” Gosling told Variety. “My priorities changed, and I wanted to be with my kids. It’s going super fast. I hear the clock ticking. I don’t know how much time I’m going to get, and I don’t want to spend it in the wrong place. I know I’m not spending it in the wrong place if I’m with my family.”
Since returning to the big screen, Gosling has made sure only to take roles that are beneficial for his kids.
“I’m a dad first, and part of the reason for doing [THE GRAY MAN] was this opportunity for us to go to these interesting places and be there with my kids,” Gosling told The Daily Mail in August 2022.
“You know it’s funny, we went to France and we went everywhere – we went to the Louvre and all these things. And if I asked them now, ‘What was your favorite part about France?’ They will say, ‘The fruit place at the hotel,’” he continued.
His kids were also part of his motivation for taking the role of Ken in the immensely popular BARBIE movie.
“Well, BARBIE was a way to [introduce my daughters to acting]. Not necessarily like I’m making it for them, but it’s the first time I think they kind of are understanding, although they can’t for the life of the, understand why I want to play Ken because nobody plays with Ken,” Gosling said.
The actor’s parenting-first approach to his career is shared by his wife, Eva Medes, who has not played an on-screen role since 2014. She has, however, lent her voice talent to the kid’s show BLUEY.
Now that their kids are a little older, Mendes is starting to open up to the idea of returning to acting, but she would only do so under the right conditions.

When asked if she would come back to the big screen for a role that does meet all her criteria, Mendes said yes, but “it has to be nice and clean.”
