“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

– Joshua 1:9

Is any area of the Entertainment Industry out of bounds?

In 1981, as president of the Episcopal Radio-TV Foundation, Inc., I initiated and produced for the Protestant Radio TV Center (a consortium of four denominations) a television series for PBS television satellite distribution entitled, Perspectives. After one year on the PBS satellite, Perspectives was carried on 120 PBS stations and cable systems. Several programs in the series won important national awards. Furthermore, every program I produced and hosted had a biblical perspective.

One evening, at a benefit dinner, a renowned church musician opened a conversation with me by complaining that Christians could not place programs on PBS television because PBS would not carry programs containing a religious message. Another Christian who produced television programs had complained to my new friend that he could not convince PBS to carry his latest program. I mentioned Perspectives and suggested that the problem was not necessarily PBS, rather it might have been the quality of the program in question, or the program may not have fit the PBS format. In fact, I was aware of the program, and it was not directed, or edited, very well, although it had a great message.

Of course, the problem could have been with one of the PBS member stations, or with personnel. However, all too often the problem is not with the gatekeeper, or ‘the other guy,’ but instead with the design and quality of our communication.
