YouTube Helps Creators and Celebrities Combat AI Deepfakes
By Movieguide® Contributor
YouTube is taking a stance against AI deepfakes.
In partnership with the Creative Artists Agency, the video platform will provide a way for celebrities and creators to be notified of AI copies and submit a removal request.
MSN reported, “In September, YouTube announced plans for tools that would help manage AI-generated depictions of creators and their voices. Now, the company says it can give celebrities (and soon, creators) the ability to manage AI copies of their likeness, such as their face, ‘at scale.’”
The technology used is called CAAVault. It scans AI sources for similarities in appearance and voices to other creators.
Concerns around AI deepfakes have grown in recent years.
Last year, Zelda, daughter of the late actor Robin Williams, spoke out about how AI has replicated her father.
“This isn’t theoretical, it is very very real,” she said. “I’ve already heard AI used to get his ‘voice’ to say whatever people want and while I find it personally disturbing, the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings. Living actors deserve a chance to create characters with their choices, to voice cartoons, to put their HUMAN effort and time into pursuit of performance.”
Other celebrities including Scarlett Johansson and Taylor Swift have also had AI copy them.

Despite the growing problem, YouTube still sees a benefit to AI. Recently the company launched GenAI to help creators use AI to enhance their content.
In a blog post, the platform said, “The GenAI revolution is here and poised to supercharge the creative landscape in unprecedented ways. It’s helping creatives bring big ideas to life, opening doors for more people to thrive in the creator economy, and delivering higher-quality content to viewers globally. While there are still challenges and questions to address, our research shows optimism around the future of GenAI in creative work.”
