101 DALMATIANS is adorable. This live action version of Disney’s classic animated movie pushes all the right emotional buttons while upholding marriage and the sanctity of human life, as well as a high regard for animal life. Set in London, 101 DALMATIANS tells about two well-rounded singles who get together through their Dalmatians. Or rather, their Dalmatians drag them together. When they realize that their Dalmatians are in love, they know they can’t separate them, so they get married. Soon, both the human and the Dalmatian family are pregnant. Anita the wife, is a dress designer for Cruella DeVil. When Cruella sees Anita’s drawings and a picture of Anita’s Dalmatian, Cruella realizes she wants a Dalmatian skin dress. Therefore, she sets out to capture not only Anita’s dogs’ puppies, but a total of 99 puppies to produce this dress.
This is an adorable, fast-paced movie. We could quibble with the slapstick violence but it is much less than most live action children’s fare. We could quibble with the overly intelligent animals, but they don’t talk. This is clearly a fairy tale, with a beautiful church scene and bungling burglars who say that they are saved and thank God when the police finally catch them. This is one that the whole family can enjoy.
