What You Need To Know:
Director Uwe Boll is known for the terrible B movies he’s directed, but he does a little bit better here. Assisting him is a veteran cast, including Burt Reynolds, John Rhys Davies, Ray Liotta, Claire Forlani, and Ron Perlman as well as Jason Statham. Statham has a talent for creating sympathetic, heroic characters. Despite some silly happenings, including pieces of awful dialogue, IN THE NAME OF THE KING rates a caution for older children because of war violence, brief foul language, implied sexual references, and fantasy magic.

(PaPa, B, L, VV, S, A, M) Strong pagan worldview with fantasy magic in parts of story, character says, “May the gods save us,” and another character mentions God but says he expects no special help from God in time of crisis, plus courageous characters fight army of bipedal creatures allied with evil, power-hungry sorcerer; two obscenities and one light profanity; strong action violence with a little blood includes creatures attack villages, medieval battle scenes, implied murder of a boy, much sword fighting, arrows pierce soldiers and creatures, sorcerers battle one another with magic; lightly implied fornication when clothed characters talk in bedroom and implied married sex; some female cleavage; alcohol use; no smoking or drugs; and, kidnapping.

IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SIEGE TALE is an adventure fantasy that came and went quickly in theaters earlier this year and is now on DVD for sale or rental.
The movie stars Jason Statham of the TRANSPORTER movies as Farmer, a real farmer who gets involved in fighting an evil sorcerer who’s killed his young son and kidnapped his wife, Solana. The sorcerer, Gallian, is trying to take over the kingdom of King Konreid, whose only heir to the throne was killed with the Queen. Gallian commands an army of Krugs, half-human/half-monster creatures similar to the orcs in Tolkien’s Christian fantasy, THE LORD OF THE RINGS (the extremely influential precursor to modern-day fantasy adventure tales about wizards, elves and fantastic creatures and monsters). With the Krugs, he is laying waste to the countryside. He has also seduced Muriella, the daughter of the King’s magus or wizard.
As the battle gets desperate, Farmer teams up with a repentant Muriella and her father to storm Gallian’s castle, and rescue his wife. In the meantime, Farmer learns an important secret about his true origins.

The actors play their parts seriously, but in a spirit of fun. Statham has a talent for creating a sympathetic, heroic character. In the end, it is his character’s courage, and that of his wife, that defeats the evil sorcerer. Finally, casting Burt Reynolds as the king sounds ridiculous, but he really wasn’t that bad, unless you just don’t like Burt Reynolds.
Thus, despite some of the silly happenings, which includes use of magic and some awful dialogue, IN THE NAME OF THE KING rates a caution for older children because of extensive war violence, brief foul language, implied sexual elements, and fantasy magic.
