Worship leader Brooke Ligertwood’s recent trip to Houston ended up being an answered prayer for a special fan.
“I am — to be blunt — poorly educated,” she began an Instagram post, reflecting on a recent trip to the Lanier Theological Library for an intensive. “I just like reading. I’ve loved Scripture since the moment I was saved within its pages. I was mentored by the copious amounts of mostly lay theology (C.S. Lewis, Bonhoeffer, Tozer, St Augustine etc). I gorged on as a young studio/touring musician on the road and since, but formal study has not yet been part of my path.”
She continued, “Yet on a spring morning recently, I found myself strolling up a stone paved path toward Lanier Theological Library’s Trowbridge Village. It was the first morning of Dr Lynn Cohick’s doctoral intensive, which I would be sitting in for the week due to the kindness of Dr Cohick and masterminding of my friend Lisa.”
The Lanier Theological Library, a research library that opened in 2010, contains “over 100,000 volumes, with particular emphasis on Archaeology, Biblical Studies, Church History, the DeadSea Scrolls, Egyptology, Linguistics, and Theology.”
While she was walking on campus, Ligertwood encountered two women walking towards the same entrance as her, and something interesting happened.

“As our steps converged I introduced myself: ‘Hi, I’m Brooke.’ ‘Hi, I’m Susan,’ one warmly responded. Then as I turned to the other, her big blue eyes widened and she said ‘Hi, I’m shocked!’”
“‘Your name is “Shocked”?’ I jested. She shook her head. ‘No, my name is Ksusha, but I am shocked.’ Her shock quickly became my awe as she explained,” the worship leader recalled.
Ksusha revealed that she had been praying for Ligertwood for many years.
“Ksusha lives in the Ukraine, where she has been studying for her PhD in theology remotely, traveling periodically to the US for the in-person weeks,” Ligertwood explained. “She told me that a couple of years ago she came across a clip of me being asked if there was something in my life I hadn’t had the opportunity to do yet that I would like to. I answered that one day I hoped to study theology…After she saw that clip, Ksusha began to pray — from a literal war zone — that one day the Lord would make a way for me to do theological study.”
Ligertwood emphasized the irony of Ksusha “who had faith to pray it for me saw with her own eyes a beginning come to pass.”
She concluded, “So when you pray, know this: God is a loving Father with a glint in His eye.”
Ligertwood’s story shows the power of prayer and God’s desire to answer it.
Isaiah 65:24 says, “I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!”
If you need encouragement today, know that whether it’s your prayers or the prayers of a stranger, God hears and will answer.
