THE CHOSEN’s Jonathan Roumie reflected on how filming the Crucifixion scenes reminded him of God’s love for us.
“Filming those scenes in Matera, Italy, was by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever done in my life,” he said while addressing an audience at this year’s National Catholic Prayer Breakfast. “It was physically demanding, but even more than that, it carried a profound spiritual weight. To spend day after day immersed in the Passion of Christ, in the reality of the cross — it strips everything else away.”
Roumie continued, “You begin to see clearly that this is not just something we remember but that this is at the very heart of our faith. That God would enter into our suffering and offer Himself completely out of love for us.”
“What struck me the most is that His mercy is not distant or inaccessible. It is not confined to the past or some nebulous promise in the future. It is present. It is real. And it is being offered to each one of us right now,” the actor finished. “In our weakness, in our sin, in the places where we feel the most unworthy, that is where His divine mercy meets us.”

The CHOSEN star previously spoke about the physical and mental toll that filming the Crucifixion scenes had on him.
“It was a one-of-a-kind experience,” he told Fox News. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life — both professionally and personally as a human being.”
Roumie continued, “I think there’s a lot more of Christ’s experience in my own consciousness than I now bring into the season. It’s probably going to be an intense Holy Week for me…the first Holy Week that I will have experienced since recreating the Passion. That was a deeply intense experience for me, one which I’m still processing…everything that I experience and go through, I offer to the Lord.”
Roumie recently joined the rest of THE CHOSEN’s cast and crew for this year’s ChosenCon.
“This is the crème de la crème of CHOSEN fan-related events,” he told the Christian Post. “You get everybody coming to this one. It’s amazing.”
Roumie added, “I can only give glory to God. He put me in this position and gave me this opportunity to build on a character that means so much to me as a person. Jesus is the priority in my life, and to share my depiction through the context of the show has been epic for me on so many levels.”
Roumie’s experience working on the Crucifixion scenes have brought him closer to God and have led him to remind us of God’s love and mercy in our own lives.
