What You Need To Know:

INSIDE OUT is an animated comedy about a young girl whose emotions get out of control when her family moves to San Francisco. Eleven-year-old Riley has had a joyous life in the Midwest. When Riley’s family needs to move to San Francisco, other emotions start to come out in her, like Disgust, Anger, Fear, and Sadness. As a result, Riley’s Joy is put to the test. When Joy and Sadness get whisked away from headquarters, the only emotions driving Riley are Disgust, Anger and Fear. Can Joy and Sadness find a way to save the day? Because of its themes, INSIDE OUT is a bit intellectual, so younger children may have a hard time understanding everything. However, it does a brilliant job with character dialogue and has a strong plotline. Also, the animation is excellent. INSIDE OUT has a strong moral worldview, with a beautiful emphasis on Joy. There’s also a strong redemptive message where sacrifice saves the day. That said, the movie’s unclear about whether our emotions control our thoughts or vice versa. Otherwise, however, INSIDE OUT is a delightful family movie.

Content:

(BBB, CC, Ro, V, N, M) Very strong moral worldview includes some solid redemptive content and extols sacrifice, joy and family, marred slightly by some light Romantic worldview elements because the movie’s unclear about whether emotion controls our thoughts; no foul language but references to a character saying the one bad word he knows; light violence of characters falling, and the character of anger burns fire, character fades away and dies; no implied or explicit sexual content or immorality, just a kiss between married parents; animated nudity of a child’s rear end; no alcohol use; no smoking or drug use; and, lying.

INSIDE OUT is a well-made, delightful movie with a great plot line, good dialogue, excellent animation, and a strong moral worldview. Riley is 11-years-old. She has had a pretty joyous life in the Midwest. When Riley’s family needs to move to San Francisco, other emotions start to come out, like Disgust, Anger, Fear, and Sadness, with Joy being put to the test. Each emotion is a character in Riley’s brain, helping her cope and grow in life, while each memory is in the shape of a ball which plays the scenes from the memories.

When Joy is trying to save some of the memories from Sadness, who is touching them and making them sad, the two emotions get sucked up in an air vent and taken away from the Headquarters. Now, the only remaining emotions are Disgust, Anger and Fear. This leaves Riley in a very bad mood indeed. Joy and Sadness decide they must jump on the different islands that make up Riley’s personalities, including Hokey, Goofy, Family, Friendship, and Honesty. However, in front of their eyes, Joy and Sadness see the Goofy island collapse. They need to get back to headquarters before all the Islands are lost, and Riley loses her joyous self.
