What You Need To Know:

AFTER THE WEDDING is a Danish Academy Award nominee, with English subtitles, about a man named Jacob who comes home to Copenhagen, Denmark to speak to a billionaire named Jorgen about funding an orphanage in Bombay, India. Reluctant to come home after many years in India working at an underfunded orphanage Jacob finds himself in a situation he did not anticipate. The potential benefactor invites Jacob to his daughter’s wedding, where Jacob is stunned to learn he is the daughter's biological father.

AFTER THE WEDDING unfolds like a cross between a mystery, a love story and a heavy drama. While there is a Christian wedding and a funeral, the rest of the movie seems to ignore God – even the opening sequence dealing with feeding the poor in Bombay. Not wanting to give away the plot, there are several instances in the movie where seeking God’s help would have been wise. MOVIEGUIDE® commends the filmmakers for the strong moral attention given to caring for orphans but cannot endorse the movie as a whole because of some foul language, brief nudity and a lack of reliance on God when the need was greatest.

Content:

(H, BB, C, L, V, S, NN, AA, D, M) Light humanist, godless worldview in dealing with the story's main issues, but containing a strong moral, biblical interest in caring for orphans and a Christian marriage ceremony and a Christian funeral; six obscenities and two profanities; no violence; light violence against property; one very brief scene of a husband caught in the act of adultery; some sexual nudity in one brief scene; heavy drinking with obvious drunken behavior; smoking; and, dishonesty and using wealth to manipulate others.

More Detail:

AFTER THE WEDDING is a Danish Academy Award nominee, with English subtitles, about a man named Jacob (Mads Mikkelsen) who comes home to Copenhagen, Denmark to speak to a billionaire named Jorgen (Rolf Lassgard) about funding an orphanage in Bombay, India. Reluctant to come home after many years in India working at an underfunded orphanage Jacob finds himself in a situation he did not anticipate. The potential benefactor invites Jacob to his daughter’s wedding, where he is stunned to learn that he is the daughter’s biological father.

From here, AFTER THE WEDDING unfolds like a cross between a mystery, a love story and a heavy drama. There are unexpected twists and turns where the characters must adjust to each new revelation.

AFTER THE WEDDING is not shot in typical Hollywood style. Mikkelsen comes across as rather stiff at times while Lassgard is quite convincing as the billionaire. His wife, played by Sidse Babett Knudsen, looks like a twin sister of Patricia Richardson (Jill on HOME IMPROVEMENT).

While the movie includes a wedding and a funeral conducted in obviously Christian ceremonies, the rest of the movie seems to ignore God – even the opening sequence dealing with feeding the poor in Bombay.
