MY LIFE WITHOUT ME

What You Need To Know:

In MY LIFE WITHOUT ME, a young woman hides the fact of her terminal cancer to live out her final days fulfilling a list of selfish pursuits, including an adulterous affair. This depressing, humanistic movie should be more aptly titled, MY LIFE WITHOUT GOD.

Content:

(HHH, LL, V, S, N, A, D, M) Very strong humanist worldview with conclusion that there is nothing more than death and theme that says, “If we’re going to die tomorrow, we might as well indulge all of our selfish fantasies”; 14 obscenities and three profanities; minor violence with woman collapsing from cancerous tumor and woman vomits; implied fornication and adulterous fornication, but nothing explicit; upper male nudity and woman in underwear; alcohol use; smoking and prescription drug use; and, miscellaneous immorality includes lying.

More Detail:

Ann and Don and their two children, Penny and Patsy, live in a little trailer behind Ann’s mother’s house. Ann works nights cleaning a college; Don works on a crew building swimming pools. Ann had her first child at 17, and her second two years later. When she collapses in her trailer, her mother takes her to the hospital. There, Dr. Thompson tells her that she is going to die in two to three months, from tumors that have spread from her uterus to her stomach and kidneys. She hides this fact from her family and writes a list of things she wants to do before she dies, one of which is to have an affair.

Ann records tapes for each one of her children, for each birthday leading up to their 18th. She has an affair with a clueless, clunky guy named Lee, who falls in love with her. And, as she’s dying, she says that there’s nothing after we die.

Of course, this is a misguided, humanist message. If we reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we will die and go to hell. If we accept His love and redemption, we will be saved and go to heaven. MY LIFE WITHOUT ME should be titled MY LIFE WITHOUT GOD.

What’s almost as bad about this movie is the fact that Ann lies to her loving husband and commits adultery, with no remorse. Ann has two beautiful children, a wonderful husband, and an opportunity to make something of her life, despite her prognosis. Instead, she squanders her final days on her selfishness. Not surprisingly, critics have found a lot of merit in this mediocre, tedious and overlong movie.

Clearly shot on a low budget, some of the acting is laughable, the character motivations are unclear, the dialogue meanders, and the jeopardy is non-existent through much of the movie. This is humanist boredom and a sad testimony to the decadent state of the world.
