HEAVY is as simple as any “boy meets girl” story, but with a few strange complicating factors. Victor, a cook at his mother’s restaurant, falls for the new waitress Callie. However, when his mother dies, Victor is forced to keep it a secret, for fear that the news would release Callie of her vow to help his mother. He is forced to lie to friends, employees and even Callie. When she finally confronts him, wishing to visit his mother in the hospital, Victor is left to his own means to decide whether to whither away or move on with his life.

Despite its apparent simplicity, HEAVY is an effective piece of film making, a character study of a man who is too unsure of himself to achieve his dreams and too in love with a woman to think of anything else. Without any mention of divine intervention, the only real message is a cry telling us that there comes a time in every life when one must choose between difficult roads. Even though we bear our burdens, we must persevere. With a little foul language, it does have mild violence, sex and nudity in demonstrating the challenges of being overweight.
