What You Need To Know:

LABYRINTH OF LIES is a fictionalized account from Germany about the lead-up to the 1963 trials of Nazi war criminals engaged in the extermination of German and Polish Jews at the Auschwitz Death Camp in Poland. Johann Radmann, a fictionalized composite of three actual prosecutors in Frankfurt Germany, gets the go-ahead in 1958 from Germany’s attorney general to investigate the war criminals who ran Auschwitz. Johann becomes haunted by what happened and loses friends, including his girlfriend. He suffers many setbacks that almost make him give up. However, he decides to persevere, and the trials finally begin in 1963.

LABYRINTH OF LIES is an important movie from Germany. It strongly promotes the idea of going the extra mile to bring evil men and women to justice, whatever the cost. Though it should have concentrated more on what happened at Auschwitz’s gas chambers and cremation houses, it does bring up some timely issues surrounding what happened at Auschwitz. LABYRINTH OF LIES is an engaging drama. However, extreme caution is advised due to some foul language, discussion of murder and abuse, and a sex scene.

More Detail:

LABYRINTH OF LIES is a fictionalized account from Germany about the lead-up to the 1963 trials of Nazi war criminals engaged in the extermination of German and Polish Jews at the Auschwitz Death Camp in Poland. LABYRINTH OF LIES is an excellent period drama about justice, but there is some foul language and a sex scene, though the references to the extermination of the Jewish prisoners in Auschwitz are mild. This movie couldn’t have come at a better time, what with the videotapes showing how Planned Parenthood has been selling parts of aborted babies to despicable “research” companies, not to mention Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, who refused to follow orders and validate same-sex marriage.

The movie opens in Frankfurt in 1958. Officials all across Germany have hidden the painful truth about the extermination camps and mass murders committed by German soldiers and officials during World War II. In fact, few people even remember what took place at Auschwitz, the most notorious death camp run by Adolf Hitler’s evil minions in Poland. And, children are taught nothing about it, or other atrocities.

A young prosecutor, Johann Radmann, a fictionalized composite of three real-life prosecutors, begins learning about Auschwitz from a reporter and a Jewish Holocaust survivor now living in Frankfurt. Johann is horrified by what he learns, especially the experiments on live humans by the Nazi monster, Dr. Josef Mengele, at Auschwitz. Johann decides to do something about it, but the other local prosecutors and other German officials try to block him at every turn. The only ones who encourage him are the office secretary and Germany’s Prosecutor General, Fritz Bauer, who’s long been anxious to expose the truth to the German people and the whole world.

While the hero of this piece is a composite of three lead prosecutors, Prosecutor General Fritz Bauer was a real person who eventually led the general prosecution. Bauer and the three prosecutors got many convictions of Nazi criminals. Their work also led to Israel’s capture and execution of Adolf Eichmann, the author of the “Final Solution” who was hiding out in South America. It also led to the 1968 publication of an important historical work, ANATOMY OF THE SS STATE, the first survey of the SS based on actual SS records showing that organization’s participation in the murder of five to six million Jews in Europe and other war crimes.

LABYRINTH OF LIES is an absorbing, though fictionalized, account of all the work, and all the angst, that went into preparing the trials and getting the convictions of the leading war criminals at Auschwitz. The fictionalized hero becomes haunted by what happened and loses friends, including his girlfriend. He also suffers many setbacks that, at one point, make him give up. This is especially true when, much to his chagrin, Dr. Mengele manages to evade capture, even though he regularly visited Germany after the war. Johann’s investigation ultimately drives Mengele underground, and he was never brought to justice but eventually died a natural death. Johann perseveres, however, because justice for the victims of Auschwitz is too important, and the trials finally begin.

LABYRINTH OF LIES is an important movie from Germany. It strongly promotes the idea of going the extra mile to bring evil men and women to justice, whatever the cost. Though it should have concentrated more on what happened at Auschwitz’s gas chambers and cremation houses, it does focus on Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death” in Auschwitz.

By focusing partly on the hunt to get Josef Mengele, LABYRINTH OF LIES is a very timely movie that can be compared to today’s hunt in the United States to bring the pro-abortion company Planned Parenthood to justice for selling body parts of aborted children for “research,” even when some of the babies are alive and struggling in their mother’s womb. Reportedly, Mengele sliced newborn babies into pieces and removed the hearts of people while they were still alive. When will some courageous prosecutors in America rise up to bring the evildoers of Planned Parenthood to justice? Where is the American Fritz Bauer in Congress who will stand up and finally stop the abhorrent taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood?

Another timely question the movie asks is what personal moral responsibility do you have in following the orders of your superiors? The movie’s answer is, you have a lot of responsibility, especially if your superior asks you to do something that’s immoral, unethical or evil, such as murdering Jews or murdering preborn babies. This is reminiscent of the case of Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who refused to authorize same-sex marriages in her official capacity and under her name because it violates the moral commands of the God of the Bible. In both her case and the case of the regular German soldier (or even the regular SS storm trooper), neither a superior officer, a judge nor a government official can legally order you to participate in the murder of an innocent Jew or in a same-sex marriage license. Liberals want the German soldier in World War II to disobey immoral orders, but they want the courts to force Kim Davis to sign her name to a same-sex marriage license.

LABYRINTH OF LIES is an engaging drama about major historical events and situations. However, extreme caution is advised due to some foul language, discussion of murder and abuse, and a sex scene.
