Henrietta Mears was known for her great faith and desire to bring Jesus Christ to the modern world. She was also known for her big hats and peculiar style. The Minnesota native felt called to bring Christ to Hollywood in the early 20th Century. She quickly became the Director of Christian Education at Hollywood First Presbyterian Church. Within a few years, the attendance grew over 22%.

As a vocal critic of the Christian teaching materials at the time, she tagged them as “the dullest, drabbest stuff” and created her own curriculum. What makes her journey even more remarkable is that she overcame great physical setbacks to achieve success. She battled severe vision problems since childhood. This only made her work harder to memorize material. She also suffered from muscular rheumatism, and a hemorrhaged nose. Her physical ailments promised to take her out of the game, but God had other plans for Ms. Mears. In fact, he healed her of her debilitating illnesses.

In 1947, she traveled to Europe an witnessed the crushing devastation after World War II. Henrietta returned to the US with a new burning desire to form young men and women to be great apostles of hope in Jesus Christ.

A revival began at a College Briefing Conference where those in attendance prayed and confessed their sins. Mears called Christians to attend the conference where “men shall meet God, and women should find the companion of Heaven.” Thus, the world-renowned Campus Crusade for Christ, founded by Bill and Vonnette Bright, was born.

Henrietta Mears also influenced the Rev. Billy Graham and helped bring his crusades to the world’s attention. She also founded Forest Home Christian Camp and Gospel Light Press, and wrote the best-selling-book WHAT THE BIBLE IS ALL ABOUT. Finally, Henrietta helped launch more than 450 mentors into Christian ministry.
