Richard Gere stars as a flamboyant, charming and charismatic manic-depressive on the brink of self-destruction in the romantic drama MR. JONES. Mr. Jones is a brilliant man who excelled in academics and music at an early age, but, at age 19, abruptly awoke in a mental hospital. His manic-depressive condition has continued into his mid 30’s. When several outrageous incidents bring Jones to a California psychiatric hospital, he reaches out to a sympathetic and caring doctor who falls in love with her patient while trying to help him conquer his illness.
While MR. JONES is the story of the main character and his struggles, it is also the story of a caring doctor who sees her patient’s pain and understands his emotions. The film is well made and gives the viewer a compassionate glimpse into the world of psychological and mental disorders. The film also conveys the importance of friendship and caring support for those suffering from emotional or psychological pain. One character in particular, who saves Jones on the construction rooftop and later visits him in the hospital, gives the viewer a beautiful picture of friendship and is especially enjoyable. The soundtrack is fitting and, at times, even fun. A touching story of painful emotional struggle and the compassion and love needed to overcome it, MR. JONES is regrettably marred by implied promiscuity and numerous obscenities.
