THE SECRET ADVENTURES OF TOM THUMB is a brilliant but grotesque animated effort by British director Dave Borthwick. Using claymation and live actors for stop-motion animation, this modern adaptation of the classic tale spins a fatalistic and morbid story about the nature of man. Set in modern England, THE SECRET ADVENTURES OF TOM THUMB introduces us to a poor couple as the wife is just giving birth to a baby boy, Tom. Just as father and mother are getting used to Tom, a representative of a wicked bio-lab that performs cruel and unusual experiments on freaks of nature and his partner storm into the couple’s house and steal Tom. They take him back to the lab where we discover all sorts of cruel experiments. Tom escapes, discovers another little person and goes to find his father. Tom’s father has changed into a cruel drunk and is killed tragically. Tom returns to the lab and destroys it and himself in the process.

While this film may present a not-quite politically correct message against experimentation on live animals, it seems to suggest that all of our human abnormalities should be used for experimentation. The visuals and sound track display foul elements of life and trivialize the value of life. It also depicts a reality of darkness and perverted living that remain curiously detached from God.
