THE MINE

"Actions Have Consequences"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

THE MINE is a very suspenseful, well-directed Halloween movie with none of the cruel violence of today’s horror movies. Brad, the former big man on campus in high school, feels trapped in Happy Valley. He convinces his former girlfriend, Laurie, to come back with her Indian Hindu boyfriend, and join his friend and his new girlfriend into exploring the allegedly haunted Jarvis Mine. Most of them don’t believe in ghosts. It becomes clear that Brad has set up a series of pranks to scare them. However, the pranks are so intense that Brad gets caught up in his own tricks.

THE MINE is written and directed so well that it is very scary without being overly violent, gory or sexual. There are some intense scenes, however, such as at the beginning when the “ghost” stabs Laurie, only to find out it was a prank. The acting is very compelling, however. Everything works together to make the movie interesting. That said, this is not a movie for little children. There are some titillating scenes, some violent scenes, a reference to dualistic materialism, and a lot of discussion of Hinduism, ghosts, spirits, and possession.

Content:

(B, OO, C, FR, Pa, LL, VV, S, M) Light, ultimately moral worldview showing that Halloween pranks have consequences, with much discussion of ghosts and spirit possession and light Christian funeral reference to eternal life but with perhaps some aberrant theological implications plus some discussions of Hindu paganism; 11 obscenities; lightweight but scary violence, including falling down a mineshaft, being surrounded by bats, fear of a tarantula, apparent stabbing, apparent gutting, and final self-defense killing and much discussion of original miners who died; references to sex; brief scenes of girls in skimpy outfits changing clothes; no alcohol; no smoking; and, elaborate Halloween gags.

More Detail:

THE MINE is a very suspenseful, well-directed Halloween movie with none of the cruel violence of the Halloween horror movies of today’s Hollywood and a sprinkling of wry humor.

Brad, the former big man on campus high school football captain, feels trapped in Happy Valley. He convinces his former girlfriend, Laurie, to come back from Stanford with her Indian Hindu boyfriend, Ethan, and join he and his friend, Jim, and his new girlfriend, Shannon, into exploring the allegedly haunted Jarvis Mine. As they sit around the fire outside the mine, Brad tells the story of the greedy miners who killed Jarvis and raped his daughters before killing him. The daughters haunt the mine looking for two souls to possess.

Most of the group does not believe in ghosts, and it is clear that Brad has set up a series of pranks to scare them. However, the pranks are so intense that Brad gets caught up in his own Halloween tricks.

THE MINE is written and directed so well that it is very scary without being overly violent, gory or sexual. There are some intense scenes, however, such as at the beginning when the “ghost” stabs Laurie, only to find out it was a prank. It is so convincing that it is very hard to discern the line between pranks and reality. The acting in this regard is very compelling, and everything works together to make the movie interesting.

That said, this is not a movie for little children. There are some titillating scenes. And, there are some apparently violent scenes with fake blood. There’s also a lot of discussion of Hinduism, ghosts, spirits, and possession.

It would be nice if there were an appeal to God for help in the name of the one true, eternal, creator God, Jesus Christ. In a crisis, Brad prays to God for help but he does not specifically mention Jesus Christ.

Aside from that, this is a very fine movie that could be made a little stronger.
