ERAGON

"A Fantasy Adventure for Families"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

ERAGON opens with the title character, a farm boy, finding a blue dragon's egg sent by Arya, a warrior princess. The dragon, Saphira, hatches and picks Eragon as her Dragon Rider. The Dragon Riders brought peace and prosperity to the land of Alagaësia until they were betrayed by another Rider, Galbatorix, who killed them all and is now the evil king. With the help of his mentor, Brom, Eragon is determined to bring back the golden age of the Dragon Riders – if he can survive the king's wicked henchman Durza, an evil sorcerer possessed by demonic spirits. Eragon, Saphira and Brom make for the hidden stronghold of a group of warriors longing for the return of the Dragon Riders.

ERAGON is no LORD OF THE RINGS, but it has heart and excitement. Ed Speelers is a very talented, appealing actor who makes the title role his own. He is superbly supported by Jeremy Irons as Brom and Robert Carlyle as the evil Durza. ERAGON has a strong moral worldview with the good guys fighting overtly labeled demonic powers. Rated PG, it is relatively family friendly, despite the theme of magical dragons.

Content:

(BBB, CC, Pa, O, VV, N) Very strong moral worldview with some strong redemptive elements in a heroic story of good vs. demonic evil, forgiveness, redemption, and sacrifice with the main villain being "an evil sorcerer possessed by demonic spirits" who serves an evil king, set in a fantasy land where magical dragons pick one human being to ride them, whom they endow with magical powers, including the ability to communicate telepathically based on some kind of yet-to-be-revealed relationship with magical elves and their language, which also renders the Dragon Rider able to cast magical spells in times of danger and in times requiring physical healing; no foul language; action violence includes fire-breathing dragons, evil scary creatures attack people, implied murder of hero's uncle, arrow hits man in chest, arrow hits man in forehead and his body turns into mist because he is an "evil sorcerer possessed by demonic spirits," arrows fired between armies, and armies clash, but nothing very strong or PG-13 like the LORD OF THE RINGS movies; no sex but 17-year-old is clearly interested in a princess whom he meets; upper male in brief scene when teenage boy is dressing in a room he has been given; no alcohol; no smoking; and, nothing else objectionable.

More Detail:

ERAGON, this year’s big fantasy adventure movie, is no LORD OF THE RINGS, but it has lots of heart and excitement. Like last year’s NARNIA movie, it’s rated only PG for some action violence and scary creatures, so it’s relatively family friendly. Though the story is a bit derivative, it moves along at a nice clip and contains appealing characters that hold one’s interest and maintain one’s sympathy.

Newcomer Ed Speelers plays the title role, a farm boy who is magically sent a blue dragon’s egg by Arya, a warrior princess. The dragon inside, Saphira, hatches and picks Eragon as her Dragon Rider. The Dragon Riders brought peace and prosperity to the land of Alagaësia until they were betrayed by another Rider named Galbatorix, who killed them all and is now the evil king.

With the help of his mentor, Brom (played by Jeremy Irons), Eragon is determined to bring back the golden age of the Dragon Riders – if he can survive the king’s wicked henchman Durza, an evil sorcerer possessed by demonic spirits. Brom helps train Eragon as they and Saphira make for the hidden mountain stronghold of the Varden, a group of warriors longing for the return of the Dragon Riders. Arya, however, is being held prisoner by Durza. Eragon’s reckless attempt to free her endangers all their lives.

Ed Speelers is a very talented, appealing actor who makes the title role his own. He is superbly supported by Jeremy Irons in one of his best roles as Brom, and by Robert Carlyle as the evil Durza. ERAGON has a strong moral worldview with the good guys fighting overtly labeled demonic powers. Rated PG, it is relatively family friendly, despite the movie’s theme of magical dragons.
