What You Need To Know:

UNCLE DREW is a hilarious basketball comedy with strong Christian content. Dax has risked everything on winning the $100,000 Rucker Classic tournament. However, when his lead player joins his rival’s team, Dax is devastated. Literally having nothing left, Dax turns to Uncle Drew, an elderly, legendary playground player who still has amazing basketball skills. Uncle Drew says he’ll only play if Dax gets his old team back together, a group of geriatric players. Will this geriatric team be able to play against “young-bloods,” or will they be sent to the retirement home?

UNCLE DREW is hilarious, well plotted and pretty entertaining. The story moves along nicely, with plenty of jeopardy, laughs, and heartfelt moments. UNCLE DREW has a strong Christian, moral worldview about forgiveness and love. It features a character who’s a Christian pastor. The pastor performs a baptism and says the Cross of Christ brings strength. Sadly, this positive content is marred by a significant amount of foul language and some innuendo. For example, two characters live together. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for older children and some teenagers for UNCLE DREW.

More Detail:

In the basketball comedy UNCLE DREW, Dax loses his all-star player and has to enlist an old basketball legend to play in the $100,000 tournament in Harlem where he’s risked his life savings. UNCLE DREW is a hilarious, nicely made comedy featuring a strong Christian, moral worldview with a Christian baptism and redemptive themes about forgiveness, love, and teamwork. However, a significant amount of foul language and some innuendo in UNCLE DREW require extreme caution for older children and younger teenagers.

Dax has loved basketball from the time he was a young boy in the orphanage. However, when he played a mean little boy named Mookie, who blocked his shot, he feels he isn’t good enough to play.

Fast forward a few years. Dax finally has a team that’s good enough for the Rucker Classic Tournament, which has a winning pool of $100,000. Casper is his leading player, and Dax will do anything so Casper will stay on his team, including buying expensive shoes for Casper’s friends. The next day, Dax sees Mookie at his court with Casper. Mookie tells Dax that Casper is now on Mookie’s team. Dax is distraught. He tries to confide in his girlfriend, but she leaves him.

Down and out, Dax doesn’t know what to do. So, he visits every basketball court he can to recruit new teammates. Drew visits one court where an old man is schooling a young man, and he realizes the old man is the legendary playground player Uncle Drew. Uncle Drew looks nearly 80-years-old, but has amazing basketball skills.

At first, Uncle Drew says no to Dax. However, Dax convinces him to play, but only if Dax allows Uncle Drew to pick his own team. Having no other options, Dax agrees. The two men travel around the country in Uncle Drew’s van to pick up Drew’s teammates. When all the other teammates also turn out to be in their 70s, Dax becomes concerned. Will this geriatric team be able to play against “young-bloods” or will they be sent to the retirement home?

UNCLE DREW is a hilarious comedy that’s well plotted and rather entertaining. The plotline and script are well done. The story moves along nicely, with plenty of jeopardy, laughs and heartfelt moments to keep viewers captivated. That said, the old-people’s makeup could have been perfected on the actors. Also, the acting isn’t exactly perfect, but viewers will make allowances because Uncle Drew and his teammates are played by real NBA stars, rather than trained actors.

UNCLE DREW has a strong Christian, moral worldview about forgiveness, love, and working together as a family. One character is a Christian pastor who performs a baptism. Though the baptism scene includes some comedy, the intent isn’t to mock Christianity in a contentious or mean manner. In fact, there are some positive statements about faith. For example, the pastor says the Cross of Christ brings strength.

Sadly, there’s a significant amount of foul language in UNCE DREW, but it isn’t excessive. UNCLE DREW also contains some innuendo. For instance, two characters live together, and there’s lewd dancing in one scene. Overall, though, the movie has great themes about working together, loving each other, and saying you’re sorry for bad things you’ve done in the past.

Because of the objectionable content in UNCLE DREW, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for older children and some teenagers.
