Ted Turner changed the world of media. Before Ted Turner, the media was dominated by major networks on television: CBS, NBC and ABC.
When he knew he could use a satellite dish, he started sending signals that were satellite-cast around the USA.
He sold advertising by telling advertisers he was reaching millions of people. However, millions weren’t watching; it was just the footprint coverage of his satellite broadcast. Eventually, the viewers grew.
Ted Baehr knew Ted Turner when he was yacht racing and won the America’s Cup. For years, the America’s Cup had been associated with the yacht club where Ted Baehr sailed.
When Ted Turner produced GETTYSBURG with the wonderful director Ron Maxwell, Ted and Lili Baehr presented Ted Turner with a MOVIEGUIDE® Award. He wanted Ted Baehr to know that he wasn’t doing it for God, but because he believed in good for goodness sake.
Many of Ted Turner’s friends at the top of his Turner broadcasting companies were friends of Ted Baehr and came to Jesus Christ, some after hours of Ted Baehr talking with them. In fact, Ted Turner complained to Ted Baehr, saying, “You are surrounding me with Christians.”
Ted Turner explained that he had gone to a very prestigious boarding school in Chattanooga, TN. Billy Graham had a crusade in Chattanooga, and Ted Turner said that he went forward in the altar call. The next year when Billy came to speak, Ted Turner volunteered to set up the chairs for his crusade.
However when Ted Turner’s sister died of a very destructive disease at a young age, Ted rejected God.
Even so, those who knew him knew that he had made that commitment in spite of his many affairs, relationships and tough talking. Many believe that God guided his life, and so he did the impossible.
