Fewer television shows are portraying abortions, and that’s an improvement to celebrate.

A recent report from the annual Abortion Onscreen report, a pro-choice group, noted their concern over the decrease in abortion narratives on TV.

The report explained the of the abortion narratives that shows have had recently, many associated “abortion with isolation, shame and death.”

Abortion Onscreen also noted, “several shows portrayed religious opposition to abortion, focusing on characters who were unable to reconcile their Christianity with the possibility of an abortion, even in dire health circumstances. Other shows reinforced the perceived unacceptability of abortion by depicting characters having false pregnancies and convenient miscarriages.”

“Only three plotlines included depictions of medication abortions, and notably absent were rich context and background for characters seeking abortion, particularly related to poverty and parenting,” they said.

NPR reported that “Storylines about abortion and conversations about it showed up on television 65 times this year, on prestigious dramas like THE PITT and CALL THE MIDWIFE, on reality shows such as W.A.G.S TO RICHES and LOVE IS BLIND and on lowbrow animated comedies like FAMILY GUY and SOUTH PARK.”

The number of times a character goes through with an abortion has declined by 14% since 2023.

Abortion is evil, and it’s encouraging to see entertainment portraying it less.

God is clear in Psalm 139:15-16 that He is at work in the lives of unborn babies.

“My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth,” the verses read. “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

Besides the spiritual and moral issues with abortion, there are documented health issues as well.

The NIH states that having an abortion can potentially harm “future childbearing and pregnancy outcomes (e.g., secondary infertility; ectopic pregnancy; spontaneous abortion and stillbirth; complications of pregnancy; and preterm birth, small for gestational age, and low birthweight); risk of breast cancer; mental health disorders; and premature death.”

Pro-life groups like Live Action work hard to protect and celebrate human life inside the womb.

In a recent Instagram post, the group shared a photo of a baby born at just 27 weeks, an age at which some states still allow abortions, showing him in his full humanity.

“We must protect every child from abortion,” the caption of the post says.

Although there is still much work to do, the decrease of abortion displayed on television is a positive step in the right direction.
