Should Children’s Shows Get an LGBTQ Content Warning?

Concerned Women for America wants parents to submit an FCC comment about why TV programs should let moms and dads know about LGBTQ content in children’s shows.

“One of the biggest issues I hear about from mothers is that they cannot let their children safely watch TV because they will inevitably be exposed to sexualized content – even in TV shows rated as appropriate for children,” said Penny Nance, CEO and president of Concerned Women for America and a former FCC special advisor, in a press release.

She continued, “Our research found that Netflix’s children’s programming includes LGBTQ themes and content, but parents would be unaware of this because TV programs are not required to disclose this information in advance. We urge parents to raise their concerns to the FCC by May 22 so that LGBTQ content will be labeled, and parents can make their own viewing decisions for their families.”

Netflix in particular drives LGBTQ content in children’s programming. CWA has found that 41% of G-rated series and 41% of TV-Y7-rated series on Netflix contain LGBTQ content.

“In their FCC comments, families should also insist that the TV Parental Guidelines Oversight Monitoring Board, which has oversight over the TV content ratings system, be disbanded and reconstituted to include more parent groups, child-advocacy organizations, and independent experts, and fewer industry-aligned stakeholders. Currently, this board is comprised of the same studios and networks that create and rate the TV content, so that there is no independent review or oversight. This needs to change,” said Nance.

She pressed that parents cannot trust the current TV content rating system, which does not account for LGBTQ content.

CWA’s report also found that across all children’s TV rating categories on Netflix, 33% contained LGBTQ content. On TV-Y7 programming, 24% of the content was explicit.

A dialogue from the TV-Y7 rated show DEAD END: PARANORMAL PARK reads, “It’s — it’s me. I’m trans, Norma. And everyone at school knows, and everyone at home knows.”

The teenage character continues, “And being here? It’s like, I can just be Barney, and I can choose if and when I tell people. I’ve never been happier.”

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE: BERRY IN THE BIG CITY’s Banoffee enters a drag show and says, “As a trans berry, I love living out loud as my most authentic self, and I wanted to dress as bold and unique as I am, which, let’s face it, is a tall order.”

Then there are two female teenagers kissing in CAMP CRETACEOUS and tons of other similar LGBTQ content in various shows, like COCOMELON, on the platform. None of this content is new, by the way.

In February, when Netflix bid on Warner Bros., Senator Josh Hawley raised the issue of the platform’s sexualized content.

“You want the United States government to allow you to become one of the largest – if not the largest – streaming monopolist in the world,” Hawley told Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. “I think we ought to be concerned about what content you’re promoting.”

Paramount Skydance ended up winning the bid.

CWA urges parents to file FCC comments at here by May 22, 2026.
