PALAU THE MOVIE

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

PALAU THE MOVIE is an encouraging biography about the life of Christian evangelist Luis Palau. Drawing from the example of his late father in Argentina, Luis becomes a Christian minister dedicated to share the good news with the people. Set in the 1940s to 1960s in South America, PALAU shows the struggle Christian missionaries faced during communist uprisings, and how the good news of Jesus can transcend any worldly ideology.

PALAU has a very strong Christian, biblical, evangelical worldview with depictions of prayers, reading the Bible, and sharing the Gospel. It also celebrates Christian parenting and focuses on the need to practice the Sabbath. PALAU has great costuming, a moving score that fits the onscreen action well, and a particularly captivating performance by lead actor Gastón Pauls as Luis Palau. However, many scenes where Luis preaches feel drawn out and make the movie longer than necessary. Trimming some of those scenes might help the movie have an even stronger impact. Due to some conversations about political revolution and one brief depiction of an abused woman, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for PALAU THE MOVIE.

More Detail:

PALAU THE MOVIE is an encouraging biography about the early life of Christian evangelist Luis Palau as he struggles to make ends meet while preaching the Gospel in South America.

PALAU begins in Argentina in 1944 where Luis, a young Argentina boy, goes with his father to evangelize in his community. Suddenly, his father passes away of pneumonia at the age of 34, but his mother never loses her faith in God, encouraging Luis and his sister to dwell on God’s goodness.

Flash forward to 1955. Luis has grown into a young man aiding his mother with the financial responsibilities of the family by working at a bank. Drawing from the example of his father, Luis begins reading the Scriptures on the radio and preaching in the street. While there, he encounters his first moment of opposition in a woman named Maria, an atheist and supporter of the communist revolution. However, their exchange is cordial.

Moments later, Luis meets Ray Steadman, a minister visiting from Palo Alto, California. The two men have coffee together, and Ray notices Luis’ spiritual zeal for the Lord. So, he convinces Luis to come to the United States, to receive seminary teaching as a sponsored student of his church’s congregation.

Cut to 1965 in Portland, Oregon. Luis is married to Patricia, and the two are studying to go into the mission field. They struggle to make ends meet, but Luis is reminded from a speaker that he must trust in God, not in himself.

Luis and Patricia learn they will go to Cali, Columbia to begin planting churches. With the communist revolt in full swing, they’re slightly nervous about their safety. In the weeks leading up to their move, Luis and Patricia aid the Rev. Billy Graham for three weeks in Fresno, California at a crusade. The encounter is very personal for Luis, since he grew up listening to Graham on the radio and was inspired by his evangelism.

Weeks later, the Palaus arrive in Columbia amid political unrest from the communist party. With a group of other dedicated believers, Luis makes significant strides for the Gospel. Yet, he’s torn between helping the poor and evangelizing but optimistic that the two needs go hand in hand and that God will supply all their needs. During this time, Luis and Patricia welcome their third child. Meanwhile, Luis helps lead Maria (seen earlier in the movie) to faith in Jesus, inspires revival in the local church with the Word of God and rekindles a friendship from his early days as an evangelist in Argentina.

On Dec. 8, 1966, Luis and a slew of other pastors from other evangelical denominations plan on parading into Bogota Plaza to preach the Gospel, but, with the political unrest and ideological confusion of the communist and socialist parties, will they be safe in doing so?
