For Danny Gokey, sharing his faith-filled principles is more important than being popular.

“The fundamentals mean something,” he said at a Turning Point USA event, referring to how his upbringing informs his faith today. “You know, being raised in a Christian home and with the Bible, it has an effect on you.”

He added, “This is why we have the Bible. People change, but God doesn’t, right? The Bible is to help us remain objective so that we don’t become subjective with the ideology of the world.”

The AMERICAN IDOL alum shared that he struggled early in his career, as radio stations were not playing his music. However, Gokey decided his faith was more important than mainstream success.

“I’d rather be principled than popular,” Gokey continued, “And here’s why: because the Bible says ‘Unless the Lord builds a house, those who labor, labor in vain.’ When you build on the principles of the Bible, you’re building God’s kingdom.”

In a 2025 interview with CCM Magazine, Gokey shared another story about not being completely authentic early in his career.

“When I sang on AMERICAN IDOL, people would tell me how much they loved my growl,” he said. “So, I’d growl a little extra. But that wasn’t my authentic voice…[My producer, Bernie Herms] said, ‘What are you selling? I want to hear what your voice is.’ I’d never been asked that.”

Now, Gokey uses his true voice — as a singer and a songwriter.

“I never saw myself as a songwriter,” he said. “But now I see I can write songs… that I can start concepts, not just use other people’s concepts. It’s evolution that gets me excited….People chase trends. I want to chase God, who can create trends through me.”

In November of last year, Gokey signed with Red Street Records.

“I’m incredibly excited about this new chapter,” he said in a statement about the partnership. “After years in this industry, I’ve learned that it’s about partnering with people who truly believe in your vision and are invested in the journey.”

Gokey continued, “I’ve always believed that music is more than entertainment; it’s about reaching people with hope and encouragement when they need it most. This isn’t just about making music; it’s about making music that matters and reaching people in a deeper way. I can’t wait to see what we build together.”

While some artists might pursue material success, Gokey has made it clear he is focused on promoting his faith.
