FAMILY REUNION: P2E2: Remember When Daddy Came Home?

"A Prodigal Son Returns to the Fold"

What You Need To Know:

FAMILY REUNION is an excellent family sitcom with positive faith and values on Netflix. It’s about a professional football player who retires and moves his family from Seattle back to their hometown of Columbus, Georgia, where his mother and his father, a pastor, live. In the episode “Remember When Daddy Came Home?,” the program’s 13th episode, a family discussion about baptism with Grandpa and Grandma convinces Ami, the youngest member of the son’s family, to get baptized. However, Ami’s father must help her get over her fear of water.

“Remember When Daddy Came Home?” has many good, clean laughs. For example, little Ami’s fear of water causes her to splash water on Grandma’s new hairdo, and Ami’s parents have a funny argument about who upsets the husband’s religious parents more. Even better, the episode ends with a happy, touching baptism scene where Ami’s father rediscovers his lost faith and gets baptized with his daughter. It also contains positive references to Jesus and the Holy Trinity. The “Remember When Daddy Came Home?” episode of FAMILY REUNION is a great evangelistic program full of Christian faith and values.

More Detail:

FAMILY REUNION is an excellent family sitcom with positive faith and values on Netflix. It’s about a professional football player who decides to retire and move his family in Seattle back to their hometown of Columbus, Georgia, where his mother and his father, a pastor, live. The family learns to adjust their big city lifestyle to the more quiet environs of small-town Southern living.

In the 13th episode, “Remember When Daddy Came Home?,” a family discussion about baptism with Grandpa and Grandma convinces Ami, the youngest member of Moses McKellan’s family, to get baptized, but her father must help Ami overcome her fear of water. The “Remember When Daddy Came Home?” episode of FAMILY REUNION contains some clean laughs and is a great evangelistic episode full of Christian faith and values.

The baptism discussion begins when Moses, his wife, Cocoa, and their daughter, Ami, come home from a “baptism party.” Ami says she’d like to get baptism and get a hot air balloon and a chocolate Bible like the girl at the party got. Her grandpa, a pastor with his own church, tells her, “Baptism is a serious decision. It’s about more than a party.” Her grandma adds, “You have to be ready to commit your life to Christ and answer the altar call at the end of Sunday’s service.”

The only hitch in Ami getting baptized at Grandpa’s church is her fear of water, because Grandpa’s church believes in total immersion, dunking a person’s whole head and chest. So, her grandma and her father try to help Ami overcome her fear of water. Ami’s experience and a brush with death cause Ami’s father to re-examine his own doubts about Jesus and the existence of God.

Meanwhile, Ami’s brothers, Shaka and Mazzi, decide to form a boy singing group with two of their friends. Their teenage sister, Jade, becomes their manager, but their first gig at their grandfather’s church doesn’t go so well.

“Remember When Daddy Came Home?” has many good, clean laughs. For example, the grandpa beats one of his smug grandsons in checkers, little Ami’s fear of water causes her to splash water on Grandma’s new hairdo, Grandma cuts off her daughter-in-law when she starts to say something serious about the Dalai Lama, and Ami’s parents have a funny argument about who upsets the husband’s religious parents more. Even better, the episode ends with a happy, touching baptism scene where Ami’s father rediscovers his lost faith and gets baptized with his daughter.

Ultimately, Ami’s experience and a brush with death help Ami’s father, Moses, overcome his own doubts about Jesus and the existence of God. In addition to the baptism scene, the episode includes a couple church scenes, positive references to Jesus and the Holy Trinity, the early discussion about baptism, and references to the biblical story of the Prodigal Son. Also, after Shaka and Mazzi’s first failure at church, which their grandfather believes was too irreverent, they get a second chance to sing more respectfully. At the same time, the grandfather realizes he was a little too harsh with his grandsons and that the worship at his church should include modern styles of music that younger people will like. “Remember When Daddy Came Home?” is a great evangelistic program full of Christian faith and values.
