HAWKEYE’s Jeremy Renner Says His Character’s ‘Real Superpower’ Is ‘Being A Father’

Marvel recently released its next installment in their MCU episodic series, HAWKEYE, which follows WANDAVISION, THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, and LOKI.

In a recent exclusive press conference, Marvel President Kevin Feige said that ever since Clint Barton, known best by his superhero name Hawkeye, appeared in some of the earliest Marvel movies, he wanted to explore the character.

Feige noted that while the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now one of the most successful franchises in media history, when he first asked Jeremy Renner to play Hawkeye, they were just getting started.

“We’re both grandfathers now of the MCU, and the trust that Jeremy had to jump into the MCU before moderators said things like, ‘Welcome to the MCU,’ It was, ‘Hey, you wanna do this thing with us, and it’d be pretty cool, and I think it could be neat,'” Feige said. “He said yes, and then he won an Academy Award, and he still said yes.”

“It was always the intention to explore [Hawkeye’s character] much more,” he continued. “The character’s history is vast… There are moments within all of Jeremy’s appearances where you see this mentor under the surface.”

In HAWKEYE, Barton is on vacation with his family when he gets caught up in saving a young girl named Kate Bishop, played by MCU newcomer Hailee Steinfeld.

Steinfeld said that the mentorship between their on-screen characters of Barton and Bishop extended to their relationship off-screen.

“We really jumped right into this thing, right straight into the deep end, and together,” Steinfeld said. “I felt so grateful to have Jeremy’s support and his mentorship in real life as I do as Kate.”

“I just wanted to communicate with her that I had her back,” Renner said. “It’s different [from] other types of filmmaking and I just wanted to let her know that she wasn’t alone, and I had her back and I’ll give her the answers if she needed them.”

However, what motivates Renner’s character in HAWKEYE is his role as a father and his love for his family.

“To me, [family] is one of the more important anchors,” Renner said. “All these [character traits] inform me and inform even the audience as to what Clint’s real superpower is. There’s him being a father. I think any parent that’s a very involved and amazing parent is a superhero in their own right.

“It’s a tremendous honor and a gift,” he added. “The most difficult thing I think any human can go through. You don’t want to get in the way of any Papa Bear or Mama Bear and their family, ’cause you’re gonna go down.”

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of the first two episodes of HAWKEYE reads

HAWKEYE has a strong moral worldview with an emphasis on family and sacrifice. Barton takes his responsibility as a father seriously, and nothing comes before the safety of his children. He shows love and care to his family but is willing to sacrifice time with them when someone else’s safety is involved. Hawkeye also has some pro-marriage themes and emphasizes the importance of trust within the family.

HAWKEYE contains some brief foul language in its first two episodes. As with other Marvel projects, HAWKEYE contains some hand-to-hand combat, explosions, and other superhero violence.

The first two episodes of HAWKEYE are an entertaining, funny, and upbeat addition to the Marvel franchise, with a unique setting just before Christmas. It contains witty dialogue and great acting performances from everyone involved. These episodes set up the emotional conflict for each character in a clear but engaging way. Ultimately, Barton and Bishop’s love for their family is what drives them.
