Teen Vogue Helps Minors Get Abortions

By Movieguide® Contributor

Following the Supreme Court’s overruling of Roe v. Wade late last month, Teen Vogue updated a 2019 article to help teens “navigate how to get an abortion as a minor in a post-Roe world.”

In the article, abortion activist Lauren Rankin said, “While Roe v. Wade has been overturned and some states have banned abortion, abortion is still legal in most states…It is legal for minors to seek information about abortion care, and it is legal for you to travel to another state to have an abortion. Some states may criminalize providing abortion, but having an abortion does not inherently make you a criminal.”

Teen Vogue frequently promotes radical anti-family and anti-biblical ideologies to its readers. Movieguide® previously reported on an op-ed that promoted sex work as “real work” to young girls, while another wondered if having children is “pure environmental vandalism.”

Their trend against the family continues as the magazine promotes abortion for minors. Because many states have enacted laws against abortion, the magazine shares what states have banned or will ban abortion and where abortion is still legal.

“If you live in one of the states where abortion is currently banned, you will most likely need to travel to another state for an in-clinic abortion. For any pregnant person, being forced to travel out of state to have an abortion is difficult, but for minors, it can be much more challenging,” Rankin writes

While a total of 37 states require parental involvement in a minor’s abortion process, Teen Vogue shares how teens can override parental consent if needed.

“You can seek what’s called a ‘judicial bypass’ in one of the many states that has this system. Judicial bypass allows you to go directly before a judge and get approval from that judge to have an abortion, rather than having consent from your parents. Yes, it’s paternalistic and unfair that you literally have to get permission from someone else to choose what to do with your body, but it is an option for legal abortion,” Rankin explains

Rankin also explains how readers can access abortion pills in states where abortion is illegal, providing tips to prevent any potential surveillance. “The Digital Defense Fund has tips on how to protect yourself from digital surveillance. Most critically, if you live in a state that has banned abortion and are seeking information or medication to self-manage an abortion, be sure to use a secure browser like DuckDuckGo and an encrypted messaging service like Signal,” Rankin said.

For those who cannot afford an abortion, Rankin endorses various “support” organizations “which specialize in financing and supporting patients who are forced to travel for abortion care. They can help you pay for and book travel, lodging, and other costs that you’ll incur.”

Ultimately, though, Rankin recommends that teens get abortions sooner rather than later because “abortion is a time-sensitive procedure,” revealing that at a certain point, everyone recognizes that abortion kills another human.

Pro-life activist Elizabeth Johnston has rebuked Teen Vogue in the past, saying, “Unborn children have no rights, but teenage children should have all right to bodily autonomy, including consent to dangerous, irreversible procedures like abortion without their parent’s involvement?”

Pregnancy “is the creation of a precious life forged by the very hands of God,” Johnston explains. “That is nothing to be ashamed of.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Teen Vogue:

A recent op-ed column published in the fashion magazine Vogue came under fire after asking if having a child in today’s world is “pure environmental vandalism” and questioned if it is “possible to live an ecologically responsible life while adding yet another person to our overstretched planet.”

“For the scientifically-engaged person there are few questions more troubling when looking at the current climate emergency than that of having a baby. Whether your body throbs to reproduce, you passively believe that it is on the cards for you one day, or you actively seek to remain child-free, the declining health of the planet cannot help but factor in your thinking,” the author of the piece, Nell Frizzell, wrote.

Frizzell is a mother herself but stated that she is “worried feverishly about the strain on the earth’s resources that another Western child would add.”

“I also worried about the sort of world that I would bring my child into — where we have perhaps just another 60 harvests left before our overworked soil gives out and we are running out of fresh water,” Frizell wrote. “Could I really have a baby, knowing that by the time he was my father’s age, he may be living on a dry and barren earth?”

Frizell did add that the decision to have a child or not is not “simply binary.” By the end of the article, it is clear that Frizell’s actual argument is not against children but against the “lifestyle of the rich and super rich” that is “destroying the planet at a rate unimaginable just a hundred years ago.”

Frizell concluded: “Attempting to raise a child with an awareness of ecological inequality, who tried to satiate his desires with human interaction rather than material consumption, who helps him appreciate the natural world might contribute to future humanity, rather than destroy it.”
