Mattel Films Teams with Skydance for Future Matchbox Cars Live-Action Movie

The iconic toy company, Mattel, greenlit another movie based on one of their most iconic toy brands, Matchbox.
Mattel Films and Skydance Media will team up for the upcoming live-action movie based on the Matchbox vehicles toy line created in 1953 by Jack Odell.
While Matchbox is known for its interpretations of real-life cars, they also have countless vehicles from classic TV series and movies.
“For nearly 70 years, Matchbox has carried enormous cultural relevance and inspired generations of kids to unleash their imaginations, combining what they see in the world every day with what they dream their own world to be,” Robbie Brenner, executive producer of Mattel Films, told Variety. “We look forward to working with our incredible partners at Skydance Media to craft a story for the big screen that evokes the same, imaginative spirit of this beloved Mattel franchise and delights fans of all ages.”
The Matchbox-based movie will follow Mattel’s recent toy-to-movie adaptation, BARBIE, which stars Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie.

LITTLE WOMEN director Greta Gerwig has signed on to join actress Margot Robbie for Mattel’s upcoming BARBIE movie.
“It comes with a lot of baggage!” Robbie tells British Vogue. “And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
Gerwig previously directed the 2019 version of LITTLE WOMEN, which was nominated for a Movieguide® Award.
Though Gerwig officially joined the team, Robbie has been linked with the movie for nearly two years.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a change to be aspirational for younger kids,” Robbie told Variety in 2019.
In addition to the BARBIE movie, Mattel has other movies and television programs in the works.
Movieguide® previously reported that Polly Pocket will come to the big screen with Lena Dunham and Lilly Collins.
According to Deadline, Mattel has several other projects in development include AMERICAN GIRL, BARBIE, BARNEY, HOT WHEELS, ROCK ‘EM SOCK ‘EM ROBOTS, THOMAS & FRIENDS, UNO, VIEWMASTER, and WISHBONE.
