‘Praise. His. Name.’: Olympian Sydney McLaughlin Sets Another World Record

U.S. track star Sydney McLaughlin set another world record for the women’s 400-meter hurdles at the World Athletic Championship in Eugene, Oregon, last week, breaking her previous world record and giving glory to God.
“I’ll have to start off by saying all the glory to God,” she told NBC Sports. “These past few days getting ready for this race, Hebrews 4:16 has been on my mind—coming boldly to His throne to receive mercy and grace. And I think He really gave me the strength to do it today, so all the glory goes to God.”
On her personal Instagram account, she posted:
What a beautiful day yesterday was. Preparing for this meet, the core of my team was centered around faith and belief. The amount of prayer coupled with hard work was divinely culminated in 50.68 seconds. By the grace of God, we accomplished our goal. Thank you so much to my coach, my husband, my team, my family, and all of my supporters. Let’s continue pushing the bounds of the sport, because with God, all things are possible! God bless. ❤️🙏🏽

McLaughlin gave glory to God at the Tokyo Olympics last summer when she initially broke the world record for this event. “I just kept hearing God say, ‘Just focus on me,’” Movieguide® reported.
She added, “It was the best race plan I could have ever assembled. I no longer run for self recognition, but to reflect His perfect will that is already set in stone. I don’t deserve anything. But by grace, through faith, Jesus has given me everything. Records come and go. The glory of God is eternal. Thank you Father.”
While she was the first woman to run this race under 52 seconds in Tokyo last year, the 22-year-old became the first woman to win the race in under 51 seconds at the championship last Friday.
“Coming into this race I just wanted to go out there and attack the whole thing. Bobby [Kersee, her coach] and I have been training for this all year and we wanted to go execute,” McLaughlin added. “The last 100 hurt really bad, but I’m really grateful for it and I’m grateful for that time and bringing a medal home to Team USA.”

Surprisingly, McLaughlin thought she could go faster.
“Honestly, we thought we’d be able to go a little bit faster,” she told NBC. “But we’re super grateful with that time; anything under 51 was a win for us. We just know that there’s more to push and there’s more to be able to be taken off of that. So I’m honestly super grateful for today.”
While she continues to excel in this event, she may also shift to a different one in the future.
“Anything’s possible,” she told NBC Sports with a laugh.
Whatever comes next for McLaughlin, her faith will be at the forefront of anything she does.

When entering the 2020 Olympics, McLaughlin was 21-years-old and young in her Christian faith. However, in a recent interview with Sports Spectrum, McLaughlin revealed that her goal was to glorify God, win or lose.
“I didn’t know what was gonna happen in the race, but I knew where my intentions were,” she explained. “Regardless of what happens, whether you win or lose, they’re going to ask you about it. And you’re going to say the reality: ‘God gave me the opportunity to be here, and I’m really grateful for that and all the glory is for Him, regardless of what happens.”
