Pastor Michael Todd says new romcom RELATIONSHIP GOALS is a “culmination” of the message of his bestselling book of the same name.
“It was actually really cool because I got to initiate the idea with DeVon [Franklin],” he told Movieguide® of the movie. “This is a culmination from a message to a book, and I wrote down that it was going to be a movie.”
Todd said he “started working on the script,” joking, “Luckily they brought in some better writers!”
“I got to be very impactful in the investment, and my big thing was I wanted to make a movie that was real,” he continued. “All of the testimonies and stories that I’ve heard of people that have read the book and how it’s changed their life, I wanted to encapsulate that somehow in a real-life movie, and the team did an amazing job.”
In RELATIONSHIP GOALS, “brilliant TV producer Leah Caldwell (Kelly Rowland) is about to make history as the first woman to run New York’s top morning show,” a synopsis from Amazon Prime reads. “[But] her ex Jarrett Roy (Clifford ‘Method Man’ Smith) swoops in to compete for the same position.”
“He claims he’s a changed man, transformed by the wisdom of the New York Times bestselling book ‘Relationship Goals,’” the synopsis continues. “As her tight-knit circle of friends dive into the same life-changing book, they all begin to rediscover their aim in love. Yet Leah, laser-focused on breaking through the glass ceiling, isn’t ready to believe in finding love — even as her undeniable chemistry with her ex threatens to reignite old flames.”
When asked about the relationship between spiritual growth and relational growth, Todd explained that the two aren’t separate; instead, you should try to “live whole,” and “make everything grow together.”
“I think that spiritually, physically, emotionally, relationally, all of those things should be progressing at the same time,” he said. “That’s why I always say this life is about progression, not perfection.”
Todd also shared his hopes for what viewers take away from RELATIONSHIP GOALS — “It’s a mirror. That’s what I’m hoping…I’m hoping this movie, this book, this message would show you a piece of yourself….and if [viewers] get it in a way that’s not attacking, or unassuming, it’s easier to be able to digest and think about…I think it’ll transform their life.”
He made similar comments in an interview with Essence, saying, “This film is an extension of my wife and I’s heart to help people win in relationships. I first shared this message at our church, where it reached millions, then it became a book that transformed relationships of all kinds. My prayer is that this movie inspires the world.”
RELATIONSHIP GOALS is now available to stream on Prime Video.
