While Chris Hemsworth was hesitant to share his genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s, he eventually realized that it was an issue too important not to open up about.

“I wondered if I was letting people too far in,” Hemsworth told Parade. “Are they no longer going to believe in the action star or the Marvel character? And do I want people to know my fears and insecurities to this level?”

Hemsworth learned of his predisposition to the disease in 2022 while filming the Disney+ and National Geographic show LIMITLESS where he explored different ways people across the world face aging and take steps to limit its impact. One of the episodes saw Hemsworth undergo multiple blood tests to see if he was predisposed to any diseases, and Alzheimer’s was the one that returned. After discussing with the showrunners, the THOR star decided to share this result with the audience, rather than hide it.

“I thought, ‘No, look, if this is a motivator for people to take better care of themselves and also understand that there are steps you can take – then fantastic.’ My concern was I just didn’t want to manipulate it and overdramatize it, and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy or whatever for entertainment,” Hemsworth said.

The decision changed his life as he reflected on what really matters to him and took an honest look at what he cares about as he realized he will not be on this earth forever.

“Working on LIMITLESS was an eye-opening experience that allowed me to reflect on my strengths, vulnerabilities and all the ways in which we as humans can plan toward longevity,” he said when the show announced its second season. “For this next season, we are attempting to raise the bar and go even deeper in this exploration alongside health and wellness experts from around the globe.”

The second season of the show focused on challenges that most people face every day and ways that they can take care of themselves now to avoid problems later. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

Season two of LIMITLESS: LIVE BETTER NOW is well-shot and contains positive messages regarding teamwork, listening to other people and thanking one’s family. The episodes are shot beautifully, contain excellent color grading and top-tier camera work. Each episode boasts such a high production value that it could easily be mistaken for a real movie at an independent film festival. However, there are numerous scenes of extreme stunts, mild violence and moderate cussing. Furthermore, one episode explores Buddhist philosophy of tolerating physical pain. MOVIEGUIDE® recommends caution for older children and their families.

While it was not an easy decision for Hemsworth to share his diagnosis, it was an incredible step of bravery as he opened the door for conversations across the world and helped millions of viewers take an honest look at their lives.
